Located on the south east coast of South Africa is the city of East London. It is situated in the Eastern Cape Province, in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. It is propped up between the Nahoon and the Buffalo Rivers and the Indian Ocean. It is South Africa's only river port city.
The city has a population of around 267,000, and is almost 167 square kilometres in size. The racial composition of the city is Black African being 70.1%, Coloured being 11.6%, Indian/Asian being 1.8%, White being 16.0% and Other being 0.5%.The main languages spoken are English, Afrikaans and Xhosa, with the latter being the most popular.
Both Daimler and Mercedes Benz are the two largest employers in the area. The vehicles are exported globally, and are also manufactured for the local market. Other key manufacturing industries include pharmaceuticals, textiles and clothing.
The city of East London is extremely accessible with great highway links to major cities such as Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. The city also has its own airport, which is located only 10 kilometres from the heart of East London, and provides flights to all major cities within the country.
Some of the main tourist attractions include the East London Zoo, the East London Museum, the Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve, Buffalo Park, the Amathole Museum, Buffalo City Stadium, the Prince George Circuit, the Mpongo Private Game Reserve, the Amalinda Nature Reserve, the East London Aquarium and Ocean Viewing Deck, the East London Beaches, City Hall, the Coast Nature Reserve, the East London Golf Club, the Kwelera Coastal Nature Reserve, the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance and the West Bank Golf Club.
