Garden District Walking Tour

Note: please do NOT book this tour without contacting me first. Reservations for Commander's Palace must be made about 90 days in advance, making short notice tours difficult. Second, Lafayette Cemetery is closed for repairs and we have to make other arrangements to see another cemetery. If you will accept an alternative restaurant if reservations cannot be made at Commander's, we can discuss the necessary changes BEFORE booking. This is a walking tour, followed by lunch.  The tour focuses on the homes, architecture and culture in the Garden District and the historical background for its development.  In addition to the neighborhood, we visit the Lafayette Cemetery #1 and explain the customs for burials in New Orleans.  The walking portion takes between 1.5-2 hours.  After the walking segment, we finish with lunch at Commander's Palace (proper attire required). If you choose to finish with lunch, most people spend about $50-60 on lunch in addition to the tour fee.

Double Plantation Tour from New Orleans: Oak Alley & Laura Plantation

On the 2 plantation tour you get to experience both strengths of each plantation and what they have to offer as a narrative. Oak Alley you get to experience the grandeur of antebellum life in the 1800s on the magnificent property line with its beautiful 28 Oak trees. WEST-AFRICAN Laura plantation started in 1805 with 7 enslaved people (six west-Africans and one Amerindian). As the plantation grew, so did the number of enslaved workers. Four original slave cabins built in the 1840s remain standing today on the plantation. By the onset of the Civil War, 186 workers were enslaved on this farm. Following the emancipation of slaves in Louisiana (1866), the great majority of these former slaves continued to live in the Laura Plantation quarters. Descendants of these men & women were displaced in 1895 when cypress lumber companies had their own workers inhabit the Laura slave quarters. The cabins were lived in until 1977. Descendants of slaves live near the Laura Plantation to this day.
