Our tour begins when we arrive at Fatimas Sanctuary . It is a space for pilgrimage and catholic worship. It was built in memory of the appearance of Our Lady of Fátima to the three little shepherds in 1917. The construction began with the Apparitions chapel, but currently it has two more basilicas due the need to increase the reception area for pilgrims.
Around lunch time, we headed to Nazaré, an old fishing village, known today as the place where the biggest wave in the world, with 30m high, was surfed. Even for those who are not big fans of surfing, Nazaré has its charms with fish drying in the sun and varinas (fishermen’s wives) selling to tourists passing by.
The tour ends with the crown jewel, Óbidos, a medieval village within castle walls that was a gift from King D. Dinis to his wife, Queen D. Isabel. Before we return to Lisbon, how about a toast with the famous Ginginha (Cherry liquor) in a chocolate cup.
