This is about a 1.5 hour guided tour through some mock movie productions to give a little glimpse of the behind-the-scenes for how movies are made. I am old enough to have gained knowledge about many of the aspects of movie making, but having the opportunity to see it all in real physical form in one place was still worthwhile. The rooms here are filled with props and materials and gives you time to allow you to get hands-on with some of it. The effects and prepared videos are well done too.
This would probably be much more interesting and enjoyable for younger people and kids as much of it would be new.

This is a must visit in Auckland or at the workshop in Wellington, they all did all the work on Lord of the Rings and Avatar.

An immersion in the creation of the characters, a really very nice film scene.
For fans of Lord of the Rings I highly recommend.

I have been on many tours over the years but nothing matches the WETA workshop. As I am retired I did not know what to expect but I was blown away. Thank you so much for making this tour available

Thjis tour is full of possibility, but was only average. The tour guide started with a lame excuse for why we had to enter through a back door. The first room was basically an unexplained jumble of things. With a portable mic and more explanations and examples this could have been interesting. The last rooms with built up models, room to wander, less clutter and more explanations were fascinating. The premise that there are three ideas put forth with the hope that one or all of them could be produced is lame when no one was asked to vote of the ideas or even discuss them. Rewrite the script for the tour!

My wife and I decided on a whim to take their tour as we had just arrived in New Zealand. It's a well produced experience, with lots of ineractive areas and chances to learn about world-building, design, and effects. Definitely worth a visit, especially for families. And it's right by the Sky Tower if that's on your agenda.

The Weta Unleashed Workshop was a really great experience that I'd recommend to anyone interested in VFX, Props, or animation. It doesn't have much in the way of Lord of the Rings stuff, though there are little bits here and there, BUT it was an enjoyable experience in its own right!
You'll get a tour guide who will take you through the place. We had Kiki (spelling?), who was fun and energetic and really made the experience a blast. She was able to tell us a lot about how the sets were made and the techniques that went into it. You'll go through three different movie sets (they were made specifically for this tour I believe), all in different genres. And there's some really interesting things to see!
There's props that you can touch and interact with. Also a lot you can't. And there's a little creativity workshop at the end which children will find a lot of fun.
Overall, if you're into art and movie magic, you'll really enjoy this. If you're not, then there's not a lot there for you.

The cost of admission includes a guide for the whole hour and a half. We were lucky to have Autumn - she was so fun and enthusiastic and added so much to our incredible experience. You are encouraged to take photos and touch nearly everything you see so great for kids. This site is geared for movie special effects (Wellington is for Hobbit enthusiasts) and I can't rave how much fun we had. I wasn't that taken with the guts section where you walk through the internals of a huge beast, but it only takes a minute to go through and you can easily avoid that experience if it's not your thing.
