Our tour began as Kindall. Our bus driver took us on a most interesting route, and provided much narration about the various plantations and the geography of this area. The time spent at the Whitney plantation was self lead, very informative, dramatic and thought provoking. We learned a lot about the history of enslaved people and sugar production in the deep south. On the ride back to our starting point, once more, Kindall provided much information, including history and recommendations for other sites to see and restaurants.

I'll break this review into the positives and the negatives.

First off, the positives --- bus driver was extremely prompt (Hey, if you are not there when he gets there, you might get left behind, so be at the pick-up spot very early just in case!) and personable. Gave him a tip as he really did try to make us smile during a trip with a very heavy topic.

The tour bus is your regular kinda tour bus and was comfortable in my opinion.

The plantation displays real slave quarters that were on the property from the era of slavery as well as some slave quarters from other plantations and restored slave quarters.

Great gift shop with a ton of African-American focused books that were so amazing. I had to get one by one of my favorite reporters, Professor Melissa Harris-Perry (sp?)(Ph.D?).

Great exhibit at the beginning of the tour that details the slave trade in general and the history of when the entire thing started and which countries in Africa (remember, people, that Africa is a continent with a ton of countries. Africa is not one nation.) people were kidnapped from.

Small overall area, but things were so well preserved that you could imagine how life must have been like back then. The cruelty of it all is gut-wrenching.

Seeing the Overseer's house was just truly haunting. I could only imagine how much fear that person instilled in those that were enslaved.

Negatives

Don't get left behind by the bus! Get there early. There are no seats at the pick-up spots, so be prepared to stand a bit while waiting for the tour bus.

The big house was closed for repairs, so there were no tours there. It was smaller than the other big houses on other plantations, like Oak Alley, Laura Plantation, etc. I wish I had known that before I got my ticket as that might have impacted my purchase, but then again, possibly not. I still saw enough for the ticket price.

High ticket price and limited time -- I do not feel that we got a full three hours or so of wandering around time. While the Whitney Plantation is not the largest (in my opinion), it would have been nice to have a tiny bit more time. I did kind of race through things at times, but had time to go back and check it out again (I think we had less than 2 hours of time to walk around).

I don't have many other negatives for the tour. I would use Gray Line again for a tour of another Plantation, like the Laura Plantation or Oak Alley (which we passed on our way leaving the Whitney Plantation).

I definitely recommend the Whitney Plantation Tour for those who want glimpses into a not-that-long-ago history of our country. The plantation did not try to romanticize that era or give it the "Gone With the Wind" treatment you may see on other plantations. No one would want to hold their wedding reception here, as you see people do on other plantations. The Whitney Plantation is an authentic piece of history and something that more people should visit.

A true understanding of slavery in the US from the kidnapping in Africa, the Middle Passage, the slavery economy, and treatment of slaves on plantations. It is well laid out, with an educational audio guide, historical and representative buildings, and sculptures.

This was a very well-organized and informative tour. It was led by our tour bus guide, Alton, who kept everyone engaged with fun facts and stories, as we went on the journey to Whitney Plantation and back. He told us exactly what would happen, what the drop off and pick up details were, and kept us informed of all pertinent information. We learned a lot about the history and culture of New Orleans and Whitney Plantation. We learned about some local events that took place in the area as well. Highly recommend this your and this excellent tour guide.

The site is well maintained, our tour guide was passionate and knowledgeable. There is a lot of research that went into this place and into the tours, and it shows. It's a difficult history, and our tour guide didn't sugarcoat it. Heartbreaking and impressive; highly recommended.

Everyone should experience the Whitney Plantation. History here is told from the slavery perspective. There is no sugar-coating. It's gut-wrenching. This was a self-guided audio tour around the plantation, and a curated written exhibit inside the welcome center. The information is not limited to Whitney Plantation - its a history of slavery plus the Whitney Plantation.
