Of the 3 hour tour, 2 hours and 50 minutes of it were spent exploring the Vatican museum in detail. The Basilica was closed for a special event. We spent 10 minutes in the Sistine Chapel before getting a glimpse into St Peters square. There is really no early exit as the museum rooms leading to the Chapel are such a labyrinth. Bring a bottle of water. I was parched from the walk over to the meeting point and painfully thirsty by the end of the tour. You are on your feet the whole time so wear comfy shoes. There are few opportunities to sit and take a break.

The actual tour of the Vatican was terrific. Our guide was friendly, passionate and knowledgeable about the subjects. The only downside of his part of the tour was the initial confusion of getting the group together, handing out the audio equipment and getting to the entry point. When our group was ready to walk over to the Vatican entrance, our guide gathered us outside of the tour office to explain what we were going to be doing. The road noise was so loud, we couldn't hear what he was saying. The process at the tour office could do with some better organization. The office staff did not seem to have a process and seemed confused and did not speak with us much.

Touring the Vatican was awesome and overwhelming. Our guide, Maria, was simply the best! Following her little dog, Julius Caesar, and her knowledge was truly a terrific educational tour.
Please thank her - we did!! But, I want you to know what an valuable guide you have!

The Vatican tour was the first of five tours that I reserved for my husband and me, while staying in Rome. I did not see the option to select English tour when I booked this tour, so was shocked when I got to the tour office and was told that we were on a Spanish-speaking tour. The young lady in the tour office assured us that we could tagalong with an English-speaking tour, gave us our stickers and put us with a group and disappeared. Within two minutes of her disappearance, we realized that she put us on the Spanish-speaking tour. The tour guide, with apologies, recommended that we get the audio guide once we arrived in the Vatican Museum and pretty much put us on our own. It is a nightmare, trying to navigate , the Vatican Museum, the Vatican, and the Sistine Chapel without a tour guide. After visiting the museum and walking back-and-forth, trying to find our way to the Vatican, we just had to give up and essentially lost our money for today’s tour. I’ve messaged Viator and received no response. At this point, I’m ready to cancel the rest of the tours with them because I’m not happy with their customer service at all!

The Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel were breathtaking and our guide did a great job of explaining the history of the art. That being said, the pope had closed St. Peter’s Basilica that day, so she gave us a more in depth tour of the museum and chapel. By the end of hour 3, we were feeling claustrophobic, tired of listening and ready to do our own thing. I’ve studied these art works, so it was all fascinating to me, but we wish we had gone the self-guided route. Other tour guides were even getting frustrated at how long we were lingering.
