I recently brought my 71 year old mom to Maui as an early Mother’s Day gift. Sea turtles are one of her favorite things in life, and she desperately wanted to be in the water with them. She’s also a 3 time breast cancer survivor, has sever motion sickness, and, though generally active, not as spry as she used to be. She was worried she couldn’t handle the longer half or full day tours and was going to talk herself into being content with sitting by the turtle pond at the Maui Ocean Aquarium, but I was really hoping to find a solution that did not involve a pane of glass between her and her beloved creatures. Enter Zephyr Adventures and their 1.5 hour Turtle Snorkeling Tour. It didn’t involve a boat, so no more worry about getting sea sick. It was a shorter day, so we weren’t as worried about stamina. And then we realize that the tour guide texting us about meeting location, Joe, had an area code from my hometown of Indiana, where my mom still lives and taught high school for over 30 years. Joe went to that same high school.
He and his co worker picked us up from the Island Gourmet parking lot, provided all gear, gave an excellent safety and gear demonstration, drove us safely to the nearby beach, where we were able to stroll right into the water and swam a short way around a point to a cave where the turtles like to hang out. We saw a total of 4 turtles so close and personal that i had to fight to NOT touch them because the waves threatened to bump us into them. Joe was an expert at finding other sea life to show us and allow us to safely and respectfully hold—making sure to get photos and video of us at all times. By the end of the tour, I had pics (Joe airdropped them to us) of my mom and me together with not just turtles, but also urchins, sea stars, and a baby octopus. And when my mom got tired halfway to the caves and panicked a bit that she might not be able to make it, Joe swam back to her, gave her a boogie board and absolutely zero attitude, and proceeded to tow her the rest of the tour with no complaints, making sure she got to experience the whole thing with us and not once making her feel badly for needing help.
We were done with the trip and back at our car 2 hours later, smiles plastered on our faces, and still had the whole afternoon to spend getting lunch and massages at our hotel. It was the absolute perfect outing for someone wanting to get *very* up close and personal with these magical creatures without spending a whole day on the outing, and it was led by sweet, compassionate, funny and knowledgeable professionals who clearly love what they do. It’s a little operation, but it’s well deserving of the kind of patronage the bigger outfitters get. We are really grateful we stumbled upon it and highly recommend them to anyone traveling to Maui!
*note that none of my attached pics show turtles only bc I haven’t edited any of the video to capture stills of that part—there were PLENTY of up close turtle interactions caught on video!

Joe was awesome from beginning to end! watching to catch octopus was unique experience. We’ve seen at least 5-6 turtles

We were blown away by the experience and would 💯 recommend to anyone. Not only was it an incredibly well organized experience but it was led expertly and with ease.
The guide, Shelby took so insane photos, pointed out several turtles to us and made it so fun. We absolutely loved everything about the experience.

Joe is a great guide. The snorkeling was amazing. We were able to see a turtle, Joe grabbed a star fish and a sea urchin, amazing experience, me and my family are very happy with the tour.

This was the best experience I had during my whole stay in Maui! It is an experience I’ll never forget and it was the perfect tour from Joe. He made us feel safe the whole time and showed us such cool wildlife- including catching an octopus! I loved being part of a small group and we saw so many turtles. The photos and videos were an added bonus. Highly recommend!

Don't go if you have never snorkeled. Guide didn't have ANY patience for anyone with no experience. Altho Sydney our driver was excellent 👍

We had a great time on our first snorkeling tour. Our instructor Joe provided thorough instructions, and we were lucky to be a part of a small group. We had plenty of time to explore, and some people even dove down to get a better look the sea turtles ( I hope to do that next time! ). Joe took plenty of photos to capture our experience. Looking forward to taking this tour again next time we are in Maui!

I was disappointed in this tour. I was under the assumption we would be getting our pictures taken with turtles. Like when I did a dolphin excursion I was able to see dolphins and get my picture taken, same with sting rays etc. We saw a passing turtle. We were told by Viator this excursion would take place on a boat then dropped off in the ocean to do the tour but it's a shore excursion. There were very few fish to be seen snorkeling.

The staff are excellent. The meet place was a little far, but I’m glad I went. They have all the gear you need & know how to fit you with helpful tips.
Our guide today, Shelby, was friendly, helpful & engaged everyone. Got to see 4 turtles, a large school of fish & urchins.

My husband and I had such a great time snorkeling in Maui! Our guide was so friendly and took amazing photos and videos of our time in the water. We saw giant turtles and other beautiful creatures - a highlight of our trip.
