We are so glad we did this tour - even if we had to get up at the crack of dawn. Our guide, Fumi, contacted us in advance and even reminded me, when it was time to apply for the lottery. Sadly, we did not get into the lottery, but we still had an amazing time. We had an excellent viewing spot, where we could see much of the auction and Fumi had all sorts of material to help us understand what we were seeing. After the auction, we had the most amazing sushi breakfast. Do note, the cost of breakfast is not included, nor is the taxi to the auction. However, they were both worth it. After breakfast, he walked us around the market, where he explained different items and we got to try several new things.

The only unfortunate thing about the whole experience was Fumi's accent. He was very kind and had a lot of knowledge and information to share. Sadly, he was extremely difficult to understand. I am hard of hearing and this added to the challenge, but my family assured me that even they were having a really difficult time understanding him. We even asked him to speak slower but that did not help.

Fumi-san made the tour exciting and memorable. His energy was infectious as he passionately spoke about Japan, food, Tokyo and the market. The viewing was extremely nice although disappointed at the ability to not be on the floor of the auction. Still, Fumi-san more than made up, along with a delicious breakfast, although on the slightly expensive side. The wholsale shops were lovely and even picked up some cooking ingredients and cookware for back home.

Our guide Yasu Terada notified us in advance what time and where to meet him. We were fortunate to have won the lottery for the tuna auction. I made sure to submit my request a month ahead of our visit. Yasu met us at our hotel lobby at 5am. Our hotel was walking distance to the auction site. Yasu was a kind and patient guide. He answered all our questions and ensured we got to see the highlights of the tuna auction. He kindly explained the protocols and expectations prior to the tour. After the auction he took us to the market area where we shopped for Japanese cutlery and pottery. The pricing and quality was too good to pass up. I highly recommend bringing a foldable duffle bag to pack all the goodies to check in for your return travels. Afterwards Yasu took us to the restaurant floor which was primarily sushi bars. He recommended this one small place with 8 seats at the sushi bar and a few tables. It was closer to 7am at this point and we worked up an appetite. I treated myself to the omakase (chef’s choice) offering hoping to try the very best and freshest sushi ever. I was beyond impressed at how the sushi tasted. You can literally smell the aroma of the briny sea with every bite of fish that was caught literally hours ago. After breakfast Yasu took us to the temple near old Tsukiji. It was a nice change of scenery. From there we walked to the original outer market where we sampled a few items for dessert like the white strawberries, sweeter than the red ones. We sampled varieties of Tamago (egg omelettes) from sweet to savory. They were all delicious. Yasu was more like a traveling partner than a guide. He let us roam at our pace and showed us the highlights of the area. I appreciated that he allowed us to set our own agenda and went with it. Overall visiting Tsukiji was a bucket list item that I can gladly say was enhanced with our guide.

From the day I booked the tour our guide Fumi was in contact with me. Making sure we applied for the tuna auction lottery to be able to go to the viewing platform - which we were successful in. Fumi met us in our hotel lobby arranged the taxi and then gave us a very comprehensive explanation of the workings of the tuna auctions. Super interesting. We then went for a tour of the wholesale markets where Fumi showed us various speciality Japanese foods and the knives used by the Japanese chefs. Who knew there are 25 knives just for tuna. Fumi was very passionate and explained everything well. My whole family enjoyed the tour and learnt a lot about tuna auctions and Japanese culture and history.

Learning about the fish auction and the development of the new fish market was fascinating. Our guide, Fumi, was very passionate with teaching us about the auction, the building, the adjoining market, and the sushi lunch experience. He provided visual aids for the topics to strengthen our understandings. It was a very early start to the day and well worth it!

Fumi was a great guide. He was very knowledgeable about how the fish market operated and made sure we understood how the auction worked. He took us to the best Sushi where we ordered the omasaki (chefs chioce) best sushi experience ever. The market on the otherside of the bridge had many food vendors and shops. Very early pick up but great day!

Fumi was a wealth of knowledge!! He was able to answer all of our questions and even gave us paper handouts that had facts about sashimi and even language/etiquette tips. Not only did we learn so much about the tuna auction itself but during the tour around the market, we also learned about sake, miso, Japanese desserts etc. The sushi breakfast and tour around the fish market were special as well. Highly recommend Fumi’s tour!
