This was our 2nd trip on the TSS Earnslaw, the first being 11 years ago, but this time we decided to do the BBQ lunch at Walter Peak. It was a beautiful Saturday at the end of November and very busy. The boat is a stunning relic of the past which strangely matches the sublime landscape it traverses. At Walter Peak farm we were herded (pun intended) to the new looking amphitheatre where the sheep/dog show takes place. It was a good display but by this time 1pm, all we could think about was lunch. The homestead was a short walk away surrounded by the most beatiful gardens full of spring blooms. Tables had been assigned already and we found ourselves on the terrace with an amazing view of the lake. We ordered some drinks (not included) and waited to be called to the buffet. While our table was great, unfortunately we were one of the last to be called, so some of the items were depleted. This was a bit disappointing for the 2 vegetarians in our group as it seemed to be mostly the potatoes & roast vegetables. It was still a great buffet, and the desserts were excellent. Before long it was time for the return leg so there wasn’t really any time to have a little wander around the gardens, unless perhaps you were amongst the first to eat. The price of the drinks both at the farm & on the boat, plus the way the buffet was managed, were minor disappointments but overall this was a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon in Queenstown and experience the beauty of the lake.

The buffet lunch was absolutely beautiful and organised wonderfully. I would highly recommend coming and enjoying the lunch. The only problem was I felt that it was too rushed. I didn’t know that we only had two hours to explore everything on the Little island.
