Enjoyed exploring the city and seeing unique sites. Our guide was very nice but he wasn’t overly outgoing.

We really enjoyed this private tour. We had three quite tired children and our guide was flexible with what we did so we could accommodate their needs. He made navigation of very busy places so easy and found us a great restaurant for lunch. We enjoyed learning some language and about the culture while walking. A perfect way to spend our first ever day in Japan! Thankyou Taka!!

Via Viator we organised and paid for a guided 6 hour private walking tour of Tokyo. A few weeks prior to our departure we were asked to provide an itinerary of things we'd like to see and visit during our tour and were also asked to make contact via What's App with our tour guide Botania. As requested we provided a very modest itinerary and contacted the guide. We had no reply from Botania to our what's app message and in retrospect we realise now that her non communication was a definite 'red flag', but unfortunately at the time we didn't realise that. We arranged for Botania to meet us at 10am to start the tour from our hotel in Shinjuku. We specifically picked this start time so that we'd be able finish our tour at 4pm, as we felt that jet lag maybe a factor if it finished any later than that. On the morning of the tour we waited patiently in our hotel lobby for Botania, but by 10.30am there was still no sign of her at all. After waiting for an hour we managed to (eventually) contact Viator and informed them of the situation. They said they'd try and get a replacement guide for us and after about 30 mins they called back and said they'd found a guide but could we get to Tokyo station for 12.00pm to meet up with him. We were advised he was one of their top guides. As we had no idea where Tokyo station was in relation to our hotel and being unfamiliar with the subway system we took a taxi to the station at a cost of £25. He arrived after 12.30pm. He was a fairly affable young man who told us he had only lived in Japan for a few years and spoke no Japanese nor could he read Japanese. We soon became aware that his knowledge of Tokyo was very basic and what he did know seemed to be derived from a bog standard tourist guide book. He was certainly no 'expert'. as an example, one classic line from him was - " This building was built in 1866, or.......was it 1688, well anyway it was built a long time ago". During the now vastly behind schedule walking tour we were taken on a tour of places the guide wanted us to see and regularly press ganged into visiting a few of the guides 'favoured sites' which were definitely not on our list. Because of these detours we ended up missing out on a few of the places that were actually listed in our itinerary. One of the things we specifically requested was to visit a well known market close to a Buddhist temple where my wife was hoping to spend time perusing the market stalls and hopefully buying some gifts for the family. The guide kept telling us we were going to see the places we'd put on our itinerary, but as the day wore on we never seemed to get any closer to them and by the time we got to the Temple is was getting dark and the market was closing. He clearly had no interest in spending time there as he said he'd done it before and rushed us through, much to my wife's dismay. This mess of a tour spoiled one of our few precious days in this lovely city, not to mention the waste of our money and it wasn't cheap. If this is the level of service and quality of guide Viator offer I would think very carefully about booking any future trips with them. To date Viator has not offered us any form of apology or rebate/refund. On a final note, our original guide text us later in the day - she offered no apology but was very concerned that we didn't report her absence to Viator.

P.s To add a big fat cherry on the top, later on the day of the tour Botania did at 2pm contact us (via what's app would you believe) to inform us that the reason she was a 'no show' that morning was that she'd had some 'technical difficulties' . Apparently she'd forgotten to charge her phone the night before,. Then, offering no apology what's so ever for ruining our day she had the bare faced cheek to ask if we still wanted to go ahead with the tour with her - then seemed quite annoyed and put out that we declined her offer and had accepted the services of another guide - You just couldn't make it up???
