The Murano Glass Museum was founded in 1861 when the darkest period in the history of Murano glassmaking had been overcome, following the fall of the Republic of San Marco ( 1797) and the subsequent years of foreign rule.

The Murano Glass Museum collection is laid out chronologically on the first floor of the museum. Starting from an archaeological section on the ground floor, which contains noteworthy Roman works dating from the 1st to the 3rd century A.D., it follows to the largest historical collection of Murano glass in the world, with pieces dating from the 15th to the 20th century, many of them world-famous masterpieces.

Museum which contains wonders. However, it is missing a place which shows the manufacturing and the equipment used. A must see.

We bought a multi museum pass which included the glass museum so we popped in whilst visiting Murano. Somewhat interesting, does have some beautiful pieces on display, other bits were just okay. Not sure I would have paid to visit if we didn't have the multi museum pass

Interesting museum with a lot of glass, both historical and modern. Some limited historical information as you go through the rooms as well.

I would recommend going if you have a free hour on Murano, but probably not worth deviating materially from itinerary if you’re not planning to be nearby already.

I was looking forward to showing my friend all the old historic glass which used to be displayed with full commentary as you enter the museum. I was bitterly disappointed that all the ancient glass is just displayed in one room with nothing whatever to tell you what is Roman, medieval, from elsewhere, how old, where found and so on. All the modern glass has full details displayed but the best part of the collection ( the ancient part) is just dumped in front of you with no information- I was told the director thought it was a good idea to remove all dates and commentary.

Please update the introduction to this museum on trip advisor as it seems to say that the old glass is properly presented. It is out of date.

I only discovered this disastrous change once we had paid to go in. I was really annoyed.

Interesting museum about the history of glass featuring the works of various artists. We spent 1h30 mins there and managed to comfortably see all the rooms except the last one, as they closed it early (at least 15 minutes before the museum closing time). However, the staff was kind enough to reopen it right after they turned off all the lights to have a quick look around. It turned out to be one of our favourite rooms with the focus on recycling glass.

The only thing to note here is that the first and last rooms were both parts of the temporary exhibition around recycled glass, but we didn’t see any signage linking the two and suggesting we see them together.

If you're interested at all in glass, this place is a real treasure. Spend time reading labels and try to go on the early side or later in the afternoon as tour groups can be a little overwhelming in this relatively small space. One caveat: the ticket office closes an hour before the museum does and they don't make exceptions so if it says it closes at 6 don't expect to get in at 5:05. We were lucky enough to be staying on Murano so we just went the next morning but it was super frustrating to have planned our visit in advance using the closing time only to be told we couldn't get in.

Short but interesting museum about the history of glass making in Murano. Very interesting covering the science and different artistic styles and techniques over many centuries. The microscopic portraits made of glass are particularly impressive! The most interesting thing to do in Murano outside of shopping

A rather small museum. Except for the first room on the 1st level displaying the older glass pieces, and several other modern pieces, i felt the museum did not have enough explanation on the history .

I came to this museum with high expectations. Unfortunately it can hardly be called a museum, because it provides so little exact information about the history of glass. For instance, there is only one room for the development of glass from ancient Mesopotamia to Greece and Rome. You cannot find out, which items are from which age, or culture. Everything is nicely exposed, but a deeper knowledge is missing.

A beautiful museum with an impressive collection of glasswork. Museum includes history of glassmaking as well as information and examples of various techniques and styles, in addition to solo/special exhibits featuring specific glassmakers.

I'd recommend the Venice museum pass, which includes about 10-12 museums around the city, including a number of the most well-known museums. I believe I went to five and the cost of the pass was less expensive than paying individually for those I visited.
