Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir, one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland. Located just 30-40 minutes from Reykjavík, the tunnel is easily accessible year round. Discover the inner workings of a volcanic eruption and walk along the path where lava flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred approximately 5200 years ago. Our tour is approximately one hour whereas platforms and lights have been incorporated - making the experience of visiting the cave simply breathtaking. The tour includes all necessary equipment. Choose your preferred departure time upon booking. Please note that this tour does not include pick up and is for self driving passengers only.

The lava tunnel experience was very fun. We liked hiking in such a geologic wonder, and the guide was funny and informative. We also arrived a little late, and one of the staff had to rush us out to catch the tour, which was really kind since the next tour was fully booked, and we didn't want to miss the experience. It was also fun to get a family picture (the guide used our phone) with the tunnel backdrop. I think the longer tour would be epic, but the one hour tour was what we thought we could talk 4 teens into!

We took the standard tour because we had a 3 year old child with us.
The tour was also good to do for him, it was an amazing thing todo and when you have the possibility to do it, you should do it. We took many pictures.

Ila was our tour guide; she’s a geologist. Answered everyone’s questions, we learned a lot. Amazing facts and the walking tour was not difficult or scary. Very safe; not as cold as I thought. The outside temp was freezing. Very excellent tour; I would do it again; highly recommend! -DG from Connecticut

The tour is very interesting and we just had a huge snowfall the day before. The day of the tour was candid blue sky, perfect for those “peakaboo” hikes up to the sky from down the tunnel. Our tour guide (shame I cannot recall her Icelandic name!) was amazing, knowledgeable and very funny!! Highly recommend it and not too hard to do.

Excellent trip, would highly recommend. Amazing caves explained by engaging tour guides. Parking facilities, small cafe and toilets on site. A helmet, head torch and crampons are included too.

At first, I was a bit skeptical since the tickets were a bit expensive, however, the tour guide's story together with the marvelous colors and stone formations changed my mind so much that I felt upset and shocked when the tour was over. Perfectly designed, and easily accessible also for people who do not want to walk or hike a lot, the infrastructure has been built very well. Based on my current experience, I would recommend taking the longer route/tour, too!

Found this activity last minute on a google search for “half day trips from Reykjavík” one afternoon and I am so glad we did! This was definitely one of the favorite parts of our weeklong trip to Iceland. The guide was fun, funny, informative, and the whole experience was so cool. Definitely will be recommending to anyone traveling there!

Incredible! You are walking in an ancient bed of a dried lava river! You see beautiful colors and shapes everywhere, due to the various elements present in the lava (or bacteria), and due to the various ways lava flowed or cooled down! Great explanations from the guide, who was also very funny! With more money (or cheaper prices), I would gladly do an extended tour!
