Actually, there is no need to by skip the line. I waited in general line for a few minutes to redeem my voucher. The museum is worth visiting though. Paid Guided tour is offered at 1pm and a cultural performance at 1:45pm. Unfortunately, the times overlap and you can't do both in one day

My wife and I just returned from touring the Aukland War Memorial Museum. Overall, it was an ok experience. The museum does a good job of presenting equipment and facts about World Wars I and II but, it's falls very short on giving accurate information about the South Pacific, particularly Papua New Guinea. From What I've read, Papua New Guinea was first settled by Africans 50,000 to 70,000 years ago. In fact, it was named 'New Guinea' because according to Spanish explorer Yñigo Ortiz de Rete, the indigenous people looked like the Africans of Guinea, West Africa. None of this was mentioned in the museum so, for the museum to consciously or negligently omit these important facts leaves one with not only an incomplete and inaccurate knowledge base but, it also reinforces the false notion that Africans did nothing and went nowhere.

This was a really nice museum. Lots of pieces from the native islanders as well as history of the people. Very friendly and helpful staff as well.

Our Museum in Adelaide, Australia is free with entry fees for special exhibitions charged. This Museum cost 28 NZD (adult) without any entry into any special exhibitions which I believe was a little costly for permanent displays. Mind you I did enjoy what I saw in the 3 to 4 hours I visited. The Maori history is what I really came to see which was extensive and presented well. The history on volcanoes was a little disappointing. I had expected to have learnt more about New Zealand's volcanoes considering how many remnants there are and that there still are some active volcanoes in the North and South islands but that wasn't to be the case. The display on New Zealnd's involvement in wars over the centuries was interesting but once again the history of the "Maori war" for their fight for recognition in the 1800's was disappointedly glossed over. Overall the Museum is worth a visit but if time is limited perhaps concentrate on other things in Auckland

Really good museum, would highly recommend to anyone who has some time in Auckland. There is lots of great stuff about Maori history with really clear information and cool artefacts. There is also an exhibit on war which I thought weren't so great/clear but are interesting if that's what you're into.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour but I got scammed at the underground carpark.the gate is up so I drove straight through but didn't realise that I need a ticket to go out. I explained it to the parking person that the gate is up and he said never the gate is up its always down.end up paying 30 dollars Lost ticket rate. Always grab a ticket on the way in even the gate is up!!!

Took the hop on, hop off Explorer bus through Auckland to visit the Auckland Museum.
An impressive building, our main purpose of the visit was to understand the Maori culture and the story of New Zealand and surrounding islands.
Huge collection of cultural items, documents and photographs explaining Maori culture and traditions.
A must do activity if in Auckland, you can easily spend 3-4 hours exploring the entire museum.

i can see the architecture near the museum which was the architecture of most buildings is greatly influenced by Gothic or Romanesque design - buildings have semi-circular or pointed arches, large windows, and spires. These should be preserved as they are a country's treasure, other than that, some existing old buildings need not be preserved.

Had a great lunch at the cafe, then headed to see what the ticket options were for non-residents. When I asked if there was a combo ticket for non-residents (28 NZD) and the special exhibition (25 NZD on top) the woman at the ticket desk replied “you can choose not to go”. A bit harsh for a simple question. I replied that I find that very expensive and am surprised there is no incentive for non-residents to buy both. She told me “its not their exhibition”. My response to this was that that didn’t show a very welcoming approach to touring exhibitions. I hope she was just having a bad day but wow did that start off my visit on a weird note. In general, the museum va dly needs a facelift. Most of the interactive exhibits didn’t function and the content is outdated by 20 years. I only found a few references to 2016 but most of the facts stopped about 2004. Most glaring was in the volcano section - where the printed panels never got an update in the 3 years since the devastating eruption, which I found to be quite insensitive and lazy museum work. Two panels need a slight rewrite and reprint to fix the problem. Strange they never did it. If you have the chance, Te Papa in Wellington is much better!
