Herculaneum was an ancient roman colony, buried under the same eruption of Mount Vesuvius that damaged Pompei in 79 A. D.
The archeological area is not completely escavated, but in its small dimensions it's rich in historical heritage and unique archeological findings.
Objects from the past like food, clothes, bones and wooden furniture are in a perfect state of conservation here, thanks to the particular kind of volcanic material that became stratified on the area.

If you love history and are looking for a great way to spend a few hours, I highly recommend you take a tour of Herculaneum with a local expert. I had toured Pompeii several years ago and although both cities were destroyed by the same volcanic eruption, Herculaneum is unique in its preservation. Finding Roberta, our guide, made the tour extra special! Her understanding of the history, the archeology and lives of the people who once lived there along with her ability to explain it to me and my family made the Herculaneum come to life.
