Me, my husband, and our 2 kids (ages 13 and 9) did the small group Northern Lights tour with Greenlander on Feb 16, 2024. Our tour guide was Arbo and he was amazing! I couldn't believe how much he did - he had to drive us, track the cloud cover, track the solar activity, communicate with other tour guides, cook homemade soup, build a fire in the snow, AND take professional photos! We were picked up around 5:30pm from our hotel in Tromso, but due to the cloud cover in Tromso, Arbo drive us about 2 hours until we crossed into Finland. Once in Finland, he found a good spot to pull off the road and set up a fire. He told us that there wasn't solar activity at the moment, so we knew we wouldn't be seeing any lights for at least a couple of hours. We had a nice sitting around the fire, eating homemade soup and cookies, and drinking hot chocolate. Around 10pm, Arbo decided to move to a different location a little further into Finland to get clearer skies. By that time, the solar activity had picked up and we were hopeful that the lights would make an appearance around 11pm. To our disappoint, they proved elusive that night. We waited until about midnight and then the group decided that we were too cold and tired to wait any longer. We packed up and started the drive back to Tromso - everyone was so disappointed, it was complete silence in the car. But Arbo didn't give up. He kept looking out the window on the drive home and about 5-10 mins into the drive back, he pulled off to the side of the road and got out of the car to look at the sky. He excitedly told us all to quickly get out of the car and when we did, we saw the lights dancing in the sky!! It was pure magic! They only stayed out for 10-15 mins (it went by so fast!), but it was enough time for us to take some photos and experience this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon. We learned from other tour groups that most people did not see the lights that night. I'm 100% convinced that we would not have seen them either if it hasn't been for Arbo's persistence - we are so grateful to him!! I would highly recommend this tour with Greenlander!

We booked the 8 person tour 2 nights of our stay in Tromso. Matteo was the guide on our first night. He was knowledgeable, passionate and tried really hard to find us clear sky's to see the lights. Unfortunately it was super cloudy this night but he did find us one short glimpse of them and was very optimistic and nice the entire time with our group.
Our second night was with JJ. He was also extremely knowledgeable and nice and it was also a super cloudy evening (even more so than our first night). It was our shortest tour of the multiple tours we did on our trip though. He must've known it wasn't going to be a good night and seemed to give up pretty early in the night.
The first night we received homemade lentil soup, cookies, hot chocolate and marshmallows to roast over the campfire. All were outstanding.
The second night we received sauerkraut/cabbage soup, cookies and hot chocolate. The sauerkraut/cabbage was unfortunately not our favourite.

What a wonderful experience to see the Northern light. Mr. JJ is a friendly, knowledgeable and professional guide and photographer, he teaches me how to set up my camera and deliver great photos to us in the next day morning. Though the weather is frozen, the bonfire and hot chocolate warm us up. Of course the magical northern light delighted the trip. Thanks the Greenlander set up such great tour for us to choose.

We had booked our Greenlander Northern Lights tour for March 28, 2024, very late in the season, one of the last tours. The organization was perfect from the start, super friendly communication by email about preparation and extensive information. On the day of the tour, our guide Markus picked us up at the hotel on time and set off as a small group of only 6 people in a well-equipped minibus (Vito). Markus guided us very competently and enthusiastically the whole evening and made the "Northern Lights" experience unforgettable for us. Everything was perfect, from the equipment to the food, the course of the tour to the photo support (Markus takes sensationally good photos) - everything was perfect. We were also lucky with the weather and strong Northern Lights activities, so in short: it couldn't be better! We can definitely recommend Greennlander and will definitely come back!

JJ was an excellent tour guide. He was very patient and brought us to a lovely place by the fjords and mountains where we had a fantastic experience seeing the Northern Lights. He also took lovely photographs of us and of the light show which we all get at souvenirs.
Thank you JJ and the team!

I couldn’t recommend this tour enough. My husband and I were in Tromso for three nights with the hopes we would catch the Northern Lights at least once. We made it just in time to go on the last tour of the year.

Markus did excellent job with reviewing all available information to ensure we were in the best spot for the evening, even changing directions after first picking us up. We were in a private, secluded spot in a small group. He came with enough fire wood for the night, soup, hot chocolate and tea to help keep us warm.

Luckily with patience, we did get spoiled with a great showing of the sky. This was an added bonus as it’s all up to Mother Nature if they choose to appear for the night. We were very happy overall with the experience. I’ve included some of Markus’s pictures which he provided to us promptly the next morning.

Amazing experience! Marcus did a great job planning the best spot to set up camp and position us to see the lights. Warm campfire with hot chocolate, tea and homemade soup. And the lights did not disappoint! A truly surreal experience with the company of a wonderful guide.

Wow, wow wow wow! This is the tour to go on!
I picked this one because it was the smallest group offered in the area. Our guide was Markus, the owner. He was friendly and hospitable and focused on finding us lights.

We were very lucky because it was a clear night during a solar storm, so the show was unbelievable! And I feel like if we didn't find them at first, he was prepared to drive until we did.
He's very knowledgeable about weather conditions and where the ideal place would be.

I took some photos on my phone, but he took photos with his professional camera. He even had over 100 pictures emailed to us the next morning (I swear he doesn't sleep)!

The group I was with was also friendly and we all had a fantastic time! Recommend 1000%!

Thank you Markus! When we committed to go to Tromso to see the Northern Lights, we did a lot of research. We picked Greenlander in large part because of the great reviews. We were not disappointed. Markus was a fantastic tour guide, and a wonderful human being. We enjoyed his company and passion for the Northern Lights. He was just as excited as we were! And his photos were very beautiful. Unforgettable experience :-)

Firstly, at the time of posting this review, there are over 1000 ratings of 5* and 7 ratings of 4* should count for a lot.

I've been on numerous Northern Light tours with different companies and Greenlander are by far the best for numerous reasons.

1. They only offer small tours (no more than eight people per tour). This makes a BIG difference to the overall experience. Especially if you want to take photos with your camera. The guides are proficient with the most common brands like Canon and Sony. Even if you've never taken pictures of the Aurora before, they can help and spend more than 30 seconds helping you with your camera.

1.2 The smaller the tour, the better the social aspect is. I've been on tours with 18+ people and the silence on the bus is deafening. No atmosphere whatsoever

1.3 The small mini buses can park in places that large buses or coaches can't. This increases the places available to stop.

2. The locations they choose to set up camp seems to be more successful with viewing the Aurora than others tour companies. This might be luck, but I think it is more linked to local knowledge and the numerous apps they use to determine where to go to,

3. The campfire they set up actually serves a purpose. It will keep you warm. I've been on other tours (which I will not name) that either use a metal bin that can't keep everyone warm or even worse, just a few small logs on some stones that were totally pointless.

4. They use foldable camping chairs. This might seem like a tiny detail, but believe me, it makes a big difference. One company I went with used what appeared to be a long yoga mat which was very uncomfortable and another company had nothing. Maybe the tour company that had 18+ tourists didn't have room for the chairs in his vehicle!!!!

5. The guide did not baffle us with science regarding how the Aurora 'works'. It was explained in layman's terms.

6. Snowsuits to keep us warm were available. One company I went with didn't offer any kind of thermal suit!!!!

7. Even if the tour has been a success, on the way back to Tromso we have stopped if the Aurora has bee strong again. More photo opportunities equals more chances of better pictures to take home.

The only real negative with Greenlander is that they are so popular, you need to book your tour weeks or even months in advance.
