The museum has an interesting and informative collection of Māori/Polynesian history and culture; world war history and memorial; and geological education of NZ formation. There is a brief earthquake experience also on site.

We arrived at 10 am and spent a couple of hours exploring the exhibitions. The museum has a nice mixture of culture and history. The north entrance has a small coffee shop and the south entrance has a large restaurant and shop. I highly recommend the cultural performance, it was a wonderful demonstration of music, dance and culture. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The volcano exhibit was also interesting and unique.

It is a gorgeous building and they have a wonderful curation of artifacts. This was the wonderful part. On the other side, as an international visitor we bought separate tickets to the cultural experience and although we read you could take photos afterward, the Maori group declined. The narrator/leader of the group sounded angry throughout the performance and I was not uplifted by the event...just chastised.

The careful, informed and structured narration helped in the understanding of the way that the Māori wish to live and assert their presence in NZ modern life.

The narrator was clear and welcoming with a patient detailed explanation of some of the important beliefs and practices.

The singing, movement and gestures were fascinating and moving in turn, with great commitment and enthusiasm demonstrated.

Delighted that we chose this particular opportunity to learn a little more.

The Auckland museum is a great place to visit, features New Zealand culture through the wars ancient times.

It had a great areas for interactive learning , which was perfect for kids .

Audio and visional screens help inform as well as the exhibits.

A focus was on the creation of New Zealand, and the effects of volcanos and fears of further ones

The facility is really well built, air conditioned with lifts to aid.

Parking can be an issue so you might need to pay at a street meter.

Really great museum with many different sections. The absolute highlight was the Maori performance, had no idea it was on but told when buying our tickets. What a beautiful and moving performance it was, they explained and taught us things throughout the performance which meant you could understand about the culture and their symbolic dances, very powerful, can't recommend enough.

This was very informative and i really like learning something about the Māori culture. It was just that the presentation ended with a very negative speech about their ancestors and tribal relics being held behind glass and brick (of the museum) and away from their families that made me feel responsible since I paid to see them perform. The Haka was also presented as being only a celebration of life and birth, but the Haka can represent different things. They obviously had sour grapes over the All Blacks using the Haka, but it can be a tribute or celebration of a respected elder. Also the Poi was represented as a womb and umbilical cord, but it is also used in training warriors. I am no expert, and have only done a little research, but I felt that the presentation seemed geared to a narrow view with a negative shout toward what the colonists did to their people. It was appalling, but I would rather celebrate the vast history and perseverance of this wonderful people and applaud sharing it with the many varied visitors. It just seemed like there was an agenda to the performance that was not about embracing and learning the culture.

This was one of the most moving shows we have ever seen. The explanation of everything was enlightening and the performance itself was so wonderful. We really felt the spirit of the Maori people. If you have an opportunity please go.

If you have time to spend at least a half of the day at the cultural center you need to! And if you do you MUST see this performance. Not only is it worth the money, but it is a respectful and fascinating immersion into the Maori culture that was so moving it brought me to tears! To witness a haka alone is a once in a lifetime experience.
A must see!!
