Our trip to New Zealand was the trip of a lifetime and this was certainly one of the highlights. We were so lucky to have the opportunity to spend the evening on the boat with a small number of other couples. The Captain and staff were most welcoming and Chef Ed was outstanding! He prepared an outstanding dinner for us all and a delicious breakfast the next day. The opportunity to see all the beautiful waterfalls and spectacular scenery was truly an experience of a lifetime! I would recommend an overnight on the Fiordland Jewel without hesitation.

Our trip to Milford Sound was definitely the high point of our two weeks in New Zealand. The amazing scenery, the delightful boat ride and the trip back to Queenstown in a small plane were unbelievable. A must do for the Southern Island.

We had a wonderful experience aboard Fiordland Jewel, a beautiful and well-equipped boat cruising Milford Sound. We were able to enjoy the magnificence of Milford Sound through the afternoon and evening and early in the morning. The crew were absolutely amazing and offered us various activities: we were able to kayak or take a small boat ride with Fletcher later in the afternoon to see the seals sleeping on the rocks and look for native birds and distinctive trees and ferns on the sides of Milford Sound. Some of us even dived and swam off the big boat - and we experienced a waterfall at a very close range! Francis the skipper provided a running commentary on the history, flora and fauna of Milford Sound - and he showed us a film created by Fiordland Discovery, showcasing the underwater life. Ed the chef prepared a truly excellent dinner and breakfast, and the bar had a good range on offer and was well-priced. We had a cheese and charcuterie board mid-afternoon, and were offered hot drinks and fruit at any time by the two lovely ladies crew mates. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable, and we made new friends in no time (max capacity = 22 people). The cabins were very comfortable. At night, we watched the glory of the dark night sky from the hot tub, with pitch black surroundings and being completely alone on the water - and it was an experience beaten only by the early morning invitation by Francis to see the bottlenose dolphins, who were racing our boat, swimming just below the bow and keeping up with us for ages. They were clearly having fun - as did we, throughout our time sailing along Milford Sound. I would repeat this experience in a heartbeat, and would love to join this crew again on a longer (7-10 days) charter exploring Fiordland (something they are about to start doing as the autumn sets in, with helicopter transfers from Queenstown included in the price).

The overnight cruise on Milford Sound was just fantastic. It was really special. The limited number of cabins for around 20 passengers meant it is not crowded and a much better experience than the packed day cruises we saw. The weather was wet and misty on the first day but the crew were very cheerful and encouraging - as they explained the more rain the bigger the waterfalls! They gave a commentary as we went so that we were able to observe a number of special things. We saw seals on the rocks, a number of spectacular waterfalls and even had an opportunity to kayak from the boat. I was able to go on the tender (small boat) which was run by one of the crew. My partner was keen to jump from the helideck and was counted down by staff as he leapt! The 3 course dinner was delicious and they were very careful to cater for our dietary needs which was much appreciated. My partner proposed during dinner!! which made it even more special and they helped us celebrate with a glass of bubbly and then asked permission to announce it to our fellow travellers. A very special moment for us both. After dinner we were able to soak in the hot tub on the roof with a couple of other cruisers :)
Our cabin was warm and compact (its a boat!) with a large comfortable bed and big windows to display the magnificent views over the water. We woke early when the engine started and were able to see the spectacular sunrise over the mountains on what was a clear day. Breakfast was to order and was beautifully done. We ate on the back deck and took in the views with blankets provided! As we headed back to the wharf, we saw dolphins surfing our bow wave.
A final comment: the staff went above and beyond to assist us when my partner left his crucial medication behind on the boat. They contacted us and let us know that they had flown it to Queenstown where we were able to easily pick it up.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
Fenella and Peter

The crew were fun, friendly and knowledgeable. Skipper Jimmy was very knowledgeable and smiley! Chris cooked us a tasty 3 course dinner. You get two cruises of Milford Sound: one late afternoon and then another early morning. We were lucky with dry conditions on one for good visibility and another when pouring down which showed the waterfalls at their best. We also saw seals basking on the rocks and dolphins swimming by the boat. Bedroom very comfy. I particularly liked jumping into a chilly Milford Sound after dinner and then relaxing in the hot tub on deck.

Several groups of dolphins are swimming along the boat in the morning for 45 mins. Amazingly lucky. The overall experience is ok. Food is good and room is clean. A peaceful and enjoyable tour.

My kid always asked me where did that poster (of Mitre Peak) displayed in our living room come from - so we decided to bring the whole family there for our 17th anniversary! Without exaggeration, the entire team from the van pick-up from Queenstown to the boat made us feel like family. It was worth getting the van pick up because the trip to Milford can be taxing for tourists and Lance our driver is an experienced driver and wonderful commentator. He kept us entertained throughout the journey with his anecdotes about Cromwell and his travels, he made numerous photo and coffee stops on the way including the Eglington lookout, Mirror lake, the Lupin fields…etc. It’s more than just a job for Lance, one could feel his passion for the land. We were blessed with the weather and had a smooth boarding. The team was professional and guided us to the facilities on board and our room. We never felt rushed. I booked a quadruple deluxe room because there were three of us, the bunk beds were very small (we are relatively petite and it was v hard climbing up the bunks ) so not too comfortable if you have a family. My only concern is that the shower and toilets are built all-in-one and tiny ( feels like 1x1x1metre) so it can get very wet, bring a plastic bag with you. There were free-flowing cheese (blue/brie/others), coffee bar, juice), the lounge is comfortable and the decks are clean and spacious. The skipper is very knowledgeable and took us very close (almost within reach) of many falls and seals colonies. You could do kayaking or ride a boat, they will take you to the ‘shore’ and pointed out the local flora. At the ? Bowens falls we even spotted a rainbow. The boat anchored at a bay near the Milford track and sunset was nothing of magic. Dinner was top notch and the wine bar has a great choice of local wines (must try the Pinot noir as it’s a local specialty) sold at reasonable price. The table service is friendly and the staff (Cindy, Fletcher and others) always has time to engage in small talks with you. We boarded at 3pm and departed at 9am. 18 hours of of magic. It’s very very expensive, but very personal. The hot tub is a nice touch. My kid loved feeding the ducks.
Some suggestions: drop the quad room, convert into a twin bed room. Install more hooks or stands in the bathroom, better drainage for the shower. Allow later checkout or breakfast (move from 7am to 8am). Provide bell service for the bags, a welcome cocktail.

This is so worth the time and money. The boat is nice, not 5 star but comfortable and we’ll set up to enjoy the experience. The crew was great. Very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent, although there is no selection once on the boat. You get what they’re serving. They got us close to the scenery and provided fun things to do while aboard. And the scenery is to die for!
