The guide was a young woman with deep knowledge about the history, cultural significance, and art of the two buildings. She managed to keep the whole group engaged (including teenagers...) and was entertaining with her stories as we waited to enter the mosques. Highly recommend it (but also recommend checking who the guide will be when you book, if possible).

Our first outing on our Istanbul trip was to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia - we had booked a local guide through Walks in Europe and Melissa was very knowledgeable. She was enthusiastic and welcoming and she really knew her subject well. I found of all the tours we did in Istanbul, this one and an Airbnb experience were the best.

Remarkable place
What surprised me was all the major sites such as a hag of Sofia the Topeka palace, the blue mosque, the grand desire we’re all within walking distance

We started with glitches with the audio system, and it got worse from there. Our guide Huliya knew her historical dates, but that was about it. She seemed very uncomfortable and incompetent speaking on the religious aspects and made some very strange and incorrect statements. For instance, she claimed that the Turkish people don't pray, and if one were to see someone praying, then she can promise that they are foreigners and not Turkish. Really??? During Aya Sofia visit, she was clueless about the exact writings on the large placques adorning the walls, "I think this says..." (and she was incorrect!) sharing that she cannot read the arabic names. I totally get if she can't read arabic, but shouldn't she have made an effort to at least find out as a tour guide? I volunteered to the read and explain those writings. My family was approached by some group members asking questions with "as you seem to know more about this than the guide....", and "we should be paying you". She also dismissed the names of the 4 most important caliphs (and companions of the Prophet) in Islam as "followers of the Prophet" - twice when I corrected her. I am also a Muslim, a follower of the Prophet, and my name hasn't made it to any writing that place anywhere in the vicinity of these giants of Islam. Bottom-line: our guide was clearly ashamed to be a Muslim and spent the time downplaying the rich Islamic traditions of the Turkish culture. It may be just fine for someone who doesn't know the history, and is not really interested, but anyone who is vaguely familiar with Islamic history and traditions, and really wants to know, I would strongly suggest to find yourself another guide.

Should have started at 9:00 am and was supposed to end by noon BACK AT THE SHIP. Tour guide was confused and said she didn’t know that we needed to be back by then for a 1:00 pm departure. My voucher clearly spelled this out. I will be asking for a refund.

The guide provided good background on the history of bothe sites .The size of the group meant that we were able to move through the vast crowds with ease and did not miss out on the vast amount of background knowledge that was available to us
