The best experience of our South African Tour! Prince, our tour guide, gave us a complete history of his native country in a way that produces poweful feelings and clear images imprinted in our mind. He showed us the good and bad side of SOWETO, but we were more touched when he brought us to the less fortunate side of the township. A young man met with us and showed us how the other part of this place live. His wish is to be able to get a driver’s license so he can work and go to college. He showed us a daycare sponsored by some good hearted companies in town. I was so touched when the kids all came out by the gate and won’t let go of me. They were like little angels. They sang for us together with the teachers/caretakers. Prince also brought us to the former homes of Nelson Mandela, the sports arena, museum, and other historical places. It was a short but memorable tour for us.

Such an interesting tour! Khutso was a great tour guide – local with lots of knowledge and answered all of our questions. It was a small group of us (4 people), which was nice. Overall would recommend this tour, just keep in mind it’s mostly driving and not lots of walking. Still did see a lot though!

We started this tour with little idea of what to expect, apart from what we had gleaned through many positive reviews. We also had a deadline for our return, because we where scheduled to catch a late-afternoon flight. Our transport arrived a little earlier than expected, which got us off to a good start.
During the 30 km to Soweto, we had interesting conversations with the other 3 couples, and our guide gave a helpful commentary. After we passed the "Welcome to Soweto" sign, we drove through a wealthy neighbourhood, with lovely houses and gardens. Then we travelled past and area with obviously cheaper housing but still with very clean and tidy streets. Finally we stopped at one of the poorer parts of Soweto, and were taken on a walk down one of the narrow unpaved streets. This gave a heartrending insight into the living conditions in the poorest parts of Soweto. We felt very safe at all times.
Next stop was at the famous Soweto Towers, where we stopped briefly before continuing on to Mandela's house, in which he lived from 1945 until his arrest and imprisonment in 1962, then again after his release in 1990. The house contains many informative posters describing both Winnies's (his wife) activities in support of the anti-apartheid movement, and her harassment by police. Our final stop was at the Hector Pieterson Museum, which was established in memory of the 12-year-old boy who was shot and killed by police, during a peaceful protest by students. The museum consists of several exhibitions that tell the story of the Soweto uprising and its aftermath.
We were then driven back to our accommodation and arrived by our deadline.
We are very grateful to our guide and his assistant for giving us such a comprehensive and interesting tour, and for getting us back by our deadline!

Sunny was a great tour guide and was very knowledgeable about Soweto as he was from there. We visited the different areas of Soweto and visited a day care, it a nice to interact with the children. We also visited Mandela House and had a chance to visit the various vendors to grab souvenirs. Overall it was a great tour.
