Akrotiri was a settlement of the Cycladic Bronze Age on the volcanic island of Santorini. The settlement was destroyed during the eruption of Theros in the 16th century BC. and was buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the ruins of thin murals and many objects and works of art. Come and visit him up close.

This is an amazing archaeological site and will someday be a UNESCO site. They only have 5% of the site uncovered, and that is not enough to qualify for UNESCO. The town is from 7000 BC and was abandoned right before the island of Santorini exploded. They used barter (instead of money) to trade and lived in 4 story homes. They also had running water and toilets! These are some of the oldest toilets that have been found. The roof collapsed over this dig a couple years ago, but it has all been rebuilt and is in great shape. The roof over it protects what they have uncovered from the elements so that it will not be destroyed. There is a raised walkway around the dig. It is a very easy walk and someone that is mobility challenge would be fine at this site. We went with a guide, and I would highly recommend to do that as well as that way you really get the story of this ancient civilization. If you are going to Santorini this should not be missed. The bus stops at the site.

The site could be very interesting and the glance when you enter is fantastic, but it runs out quickly and the visit is quick and a little boring. All the frescoes and artefacts have been moved to the museum. You walk along these walkways and observe the remains of this ancient city destroyed by the volcano, but after a while it only seems like you are observing old stones. The explanation signs are only in Greek and English, there are TVs with videos but only one works. Too bad they could take away the originals but leave reconstructions to make it clear how life happened. As they did only in a small space. The cost of the ticket is 12 euros and I recommend checking the timetables because they change every day.
