Our 4-hour food tour in Athens, Greece with Ana was incredible. We met her at 10 am and went to many different restaurants, coffee shops, and even a boutique hotel where we sampled different flavored olive oils & vinegars and had our favorites with a small salad bite, fresh bread, & wine. We walked through local meat, fish, and fruit/vegetable markets. We ate spanakopita and a chicken pie that were delicious, stopped for olives (who knew there were so many choices of olives?) along with a variety of veggies and other delicious food, watched the making of and ate freshly made lucumades (light, airy donuts). Yum! Our tour ended with a lunch of the freshest, most delicious Gyros— I had pork & my husband had beef—wrapped in tasty homemade pitas. Although we have been to many countries, and have taken many tours, this was our first-ever food tour, but it won’t be our last! When you’re in Athens, Greece, I highly recommend our tour guide, Ana, who was not only friendly, knowledgeable, and personable, but she took us to the BEST places to eat, where the locals eat. Thank you, Ana.

Outstanding Tour - Our tour guide was Dorela, she really knew her way around, people greeting her almost everywhere we went. She guided us through a great sampling of foods, drinks, and desserts, as well as the market which carries meats, fish, spices, and various other food items. It’s the first time I’ve been to a fish market that did NOT smell. Be aware the final stop is a full meal, an outstanding Beef/Lamb Gyros, which we had packed up to take back to our hotel. Highly recommended!

The food venues were not in logical order. Desert was the second course after appetizers. Overall the food was very good. Interesting mix of US and British participants. Our guide Katherine did a fine job. Very knowledgeable about origin of local cuisine.

Today we skip breakfast because a glorious food adventure awaits! Our taste buds are prepped and Dorela (@dorelabz), our Athenian foodie guru, leads us through Monastiraki's vibrant labyrinth. First up, savory bougatsa – flaky phyllo heaven stuffed with creamy feta or spinach. Then, a sugar rush of loukomades, fluffy Greek donuts bathed in honey and cinnamon.
A Feast for the Senses: The historic Agora (since 1886) buzzes with life, a vibrant tapestry of sights, smells, and sounds. We pause at Mokka, a historic cafe, for authentic Greek coffee brewed over hot sand – strong, dark, and perfect.
Meze Magic: Sharing is caring, and Athens knows it best! We dive into a colorful meze spread, nibbling on cabbage-wrapped lachanodolmades, buttery gigantes beans, and crispy fried zucchini balls dipped in creamy tzatziki. Don't forget the ouzo, it’s milky transformation with water adding a touch of magic!
Sit Down & Savor: Bellies rumbling, we settle for a relaxing Greek feast. Moscofilero white wine, a Peloponnesean beauty, kickstarts the journey. Extra virgin olive oil is next, a revelation with three distinct flavors: koroneiki's bold depth, mitira's delicate grace, and sprayed truffle’s enchanting flavor. Finally, Mavrodaphne red wine, a symphony of plums and chocolate, seals the deal.
Gyro Glory (on hold): Just when we think we're done, the siren song of gyros calls. But alas, conquered by deliciousness but guilty of
overindulgence, we wrap it up for a later victory lap.
This, my friends, is Athens on a plate. More than just food, it's a journey through history, culture, and pure joy.

Informative without being overwhelming. Nice balance in terms of street food and Greek essentials like yogurt, wine and honey. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

The guide, Adele, was extremely knowledgeable about the food, culture and history of Athens and more specifically the area around Plaka and Monastiraki. Her sense of humour added to the experience. It was an easy walk and the venues were well chosen. The food was excellent and representative of the area.
