Coming into Incheon on a cruise, this tour was an amazing experience. Given the size of the urban Seoul area and corresponding traffic, having a comfy van and passionate guide, provided us with the opportunity get a sense of what Seoul is, learn a lot about Korea and its people, and enjoy a wonderful lunch at La Yeon. Highly recommend.

I found this "Full-Day Customizable Private Seoul Highlight (sic) Tour" by Here Korea Travel Agency on Tripadvisor.  I had tried so hard to find one on Pelago (for KrisFlyer miles) but after an extensive search, this tour was closest to what I was looking for.

Do note that there are many more affordable tours but they are mostly walking tours which sometimes include "hotel pick-up" but not hotel drop-off (you will most likely be expected to find your way back from a local market).  These tours also simply “pass by" certain attractions such as Gyeongbokgung Palace, the Blue House and even Namsan Tower.

This particular tour included both hotel pick-up and drop-off, which was my personal preference. At USD433/GBP346/EUR402/CAD593/AUD655/SGD587/KRW594,000 for just under 10 hours (8.30am - 6pm, inclusive of lunch time), it is much more expensive than other tours.  However, the price included an English-speaking guide/driver, transportation in a well-maintained mini-van and entry to Gyeongbokgung Palace; it did not include lunch or tickets to other attractions.

The first point of contact was Harry, who communicated via email and Whatsapp, who then arranged for my private, customised tour to be led by tour guide James.

In the morning, James picked me up at my hotel and we took our time to explore Gyeongbokgung Palace, followed by the Blue House; both were fascinating places with their fair share of political intrigue.

I had requested to have Korean BBQ for lunch, with Hanwoo beef and Black Pig pork. My wish was granted.

After walking around the palace and Blue House, I was driven to Maple Tree House at Samcheong-ro to have a wonderful Korean BBQ lunch where I really got to try the famous and oh-so-gorgeous Hanwoo Beef and Jeju Korean Black Pig Pork Belly.  Considering the superb quality of the meal, it was surprisingly affordable at about KRW80,000/USD58//GBP47/€54/CAD80/AUD88/SGD79.

After lunch, James dropped me off at Ikseondong, because I had heard some YouTubers mention this place.  What a disappointing (and slightly creepy) place it turned out to be.  I think it's probably a place where young travellers/students find cheap eats, because I saw several restaurants along the messy/dirty alleys that charged very affordable prices for their meals.  Other than that, I really don't see what the attraction is all about.  So I would say: skip this place.  Don't waste your time. (Correction: I have just googled again and found some photos and blogs that do indeed show lovely cafes etc at Ikseondong hanok village, near Insadong. So maybe we just didn’t go to the right area. It’s interesting that James the guide was unfamiliar with the place though.)

Next, I was dropped off at the very quaint Bukchon Hanok Village. It’s a residential area and basically tourists (several clad in pretty hanboks) would climb up a narrow slope just to take a few photos. I pity the residents because this must be a daily intrusion upon their privacy. I was outta there in less than half an hour.

Then I was driven to Insadong with its cute shops and cafes. I had already been to this delightful place for lunch and dessert with a friend, but it was still nice to walk around another time, and to purchase the cute, light and airy snacks in pastel shades which I had tried and loved on the first day of my arrival in Seoul. Unlike the place we thought was Ikseondong, this place had a really nice vibe. So…definitely make time for Insadong!

Then we headed to Namsan Tower.  We took the cable car and also the special elevator/lift with its audio visual media presentation of N Tower (including “fireworks”) within the lift on its rapid ascent, right to the very top, for the panoramic view of Seoul, and of course, for some souvenir shopping.

The last stop was Gwangjang Market.  It was just OK for me…but at least I can say I've been to one of the famous markets in Seoul, LOL. Yet to be honest, the sight of blood sausages, pig's trotters, chicken feet and beef tartare actually made me feel quite ill, and for a moment, I was afraid I was going to throw up.  The only thing I didn't mind trying was the deep fried green onion and meat pancakes at KRW8,000. (They were crispy and tasty but way too oily.)  I wouldn't have minded the twisted sugar donuts either, but the queue/line was ridiculously long, and I think queueing up for food is simply a waste of precious time.

I was finally dropped off at my hotel safe and sound, in the early evening, at around 6pm.

The full-day tour was one of several highlights of my trip to Seoul.  It allowed me to cover quite a lot of ground all within a day, and James the tour guide also shared some helpful statistics/facts and interesting stories/anecdotes along the way.

If you have limited time in Seoul and already have in mind where to go and what to do, this customised tour will be perfect for you.

Highly recommended!

We had a 12 hour layover in Seoul and booked this tour. We got picked up from and dropped back off at the airport. The tour was perfectly tailored to what we asked. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions and made great suggestions of things to do and places to visit.

What a great day! Our tour guide, Sarah, was terrific. Her English was very good and she shared tons of information.

It was a very full day, but we saw so much, and learned so much about the people of Korea.

My one suggestion to Viator is to put a case of cold water on the van. It was a warm day, and with all that walking, water would have been appreciated.
