What can I say… Mad Desert Trekking are just incredible. I’m in Phoenix for work, so have been spending most of my time cooped up indoors, shivering under the air conditioning. I couldn’t wait to explore the natural landscape and experience the ‘real’ Phoenix. I booked a sunset hike and my guide, Liz, was phenomenal - so warm and friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about the desert. I learned so much on the tour but it never felt forced or like a lesson; it was like hiking with a friend, even though we’d never met before. As a lone female traveller, this was amazing!
The trail was manageable and easy, and the views we had of the sunset were stunning. Liz was a very intuitive guide, always making sure I was comfortable with the pace. She was also well stocked with water and trail snacks. I loved the experience so much that I couldn’t wait to do it again!
As soon as I had time in my schedule, I booked the morning hike on Camelback Mountain. Matt, the owner of Mad Desert Trekking, talked me through the booking process and provided great advice on the suitability of the trek. He even gave me a returning customer discount and made me feel like a VIP!
My guide on Camelback was Curtis and, again, he was a very likeable, friendly and knowledgeable guide. I felt safe and supported all along this much more challenging trail and had lots of fun along the way. It was great knowing that Curtis had a huge amount of kit, including medical supplies, should we need them (we didn’t!). Curtis offered technical advice, local knowledge and was an all-round good guy. He always made sure I was safe, comfortable and having fun. He even took action shots, which he sent to me after the hike!
I hope to be back in Phoenix next year and am already planning to book further tours with Mad Desert Trekking. This company puts you in touch with the landscape and also offers real human connections. I couldn’t have asked for more from my experiences - they exceeded my expectations and then some! The hike was great and strenuous with awesome views of the entire city at the top of Camelback Mountain. I did the hike with our 3 sons who all enjoyed it!

Liz is the best! I don’t think we would have made it to the summit without her. We were all a little nervous before the scramble and with her leading the way, our confidence kicked in and we all had so much fun. It’s definitely challenging but so rewarding. We loved all of her local knowledge and fun personality too!

Excellent tour! This was are first ‘extreme’ hiking trip. Our guide, John, was extremely knowledgeable, super attentive and just an overall good dude. We’re hoping to send our adult kids on the same trip. Highly recommended!!

John C. was our guide and he was awesome! He was knowledgeable about the history, area, and made sure we knew how to navigate the rough parts of the terrain. It was a great hike and we all had fun! I recommend it highly.

Strenuous hike, but worth the effort. We spent approximately 3 hours with access from the Echo Canyon trailhead, however that included about 30 minutes at the summit. Parking at the trailhead can be challenging, and it is closed off when full.

We hiked Camelback with Liz today. She was patient and knowledgeable. This hike can be challenging at times, but Liz kept us on point the whole time and helped us navigate each difficult section, even when rain can in and the weather got bad. We would use this company again!!!

What an awesome hike with Michael A. the best adventure guide ever! Michael treated us to information about the native plants and geography, took amazing pictures and videos of us and guided us safely up and down Camelback. This is a “must do” tour while you in Phoenix but make sure you are in shape and take water!
