Of course anyone can go on a bus with a bunch of other guests more and of course anyone could rent a car and drive to the Douro. The thing is it wouldn't be the same as having all the knowledge of your local expert tour guide for culture and wine, in a personal experience. Passing incredible landscapes on the way to the Douro Valley wine region, you will be entertained with amazing details about the area, the culture and of course, Port and Douro wines.
It's not just the landscape. It's what's behind the stage, the details, the facts, the people, and all this with fun, friendship and a lot of humour in between.
You can only get it while doing it.

There are so many day tours to the Douro Valley to choose from, it can be difficult to do so. Many, also, receive positive reviews. Vive tours deserves high praise. Our guide, Jean, was very knowledgeable, fun. and easy to be with. He was the perfect mix of being hands on/attentive and leaving us to wander at times. We stopped for coffee, "breakfast" en route which was perfect for me since we had an early start. 2 different wine tastings; both fabulous. One before lunch and the other with, post the boat tour. Trust me, they were very generous with the amount of wine we consumed! The lunch was delicious cooked on an open fire at a couple's home. It was in their backyard and could accommodate other tour groups in separate areas. Hugo, the owner of Viva Tours, was incredibly responsive to my questions, emails prior to our tour. Enjoy!

Fantastic small group guided tour! Hugo was fantastic all the way through and so knowledgeable and personable about Porto, Douro, winemaking, history etc etc! 7 of us in the group and met up near the big Porto Sign on Av. dos Aliados at the town hall (it does appear on Google maps).
Drive out of Porto and stop at Bakery and facilities before heading to first stop at Fonseca to sample some Port, then a short river cruise, followed by lunch and more port and wine tasting at a family run business for what was an fantastic experience.
It really made our trip and was the best guided trip we have done and so glad we booked this !

We really like the whole experience. Our favourite part was the generous and delicious lunch, people were lovely. I highly recommend that day trip :)

Hugo made this tour the highlight of our trip to Portugal. It’s clear how much this region and industry means to Hugo, and we were so grateful he was able to share that passion with us throughout the day in such an articulate and engaging way. Having a smaller group really made you feel like an old friend was taking you around the Douro valley. I would recommend this tour to anyone in Portugal and we will definitely book again on our next trip.

Hugo was our tour guide. He was knowledgeable and affable. We learned a lot about the region and the wines . The views were spectacular. The boat ride fun. The lunch was superb with great hosts. The vineyards were interesting to see .

I truly believe this is the best possible Douro tour you could select out of the many options! The first winery of the day is by far the most beautiful I have ever been to and by far the nicest that I have seen after scouring hundreds of photos when deciding between different Douro valley tours. The boat used is very small compared to other tours so you are guaranteed to have a wonderful view of the river and vineyards while on the boat portion of the trip. The restaurant where you receive your lunch and some more port and wine tastings is absolutely delicious and the staff are so sweet and kind. You also get to stop at a local coffee and pastry shop on the way into the region so that you can fuel up before drinking all the port and wine. This tour is wonderful because instead of a bus full of 40 people you are garunteed a small group to a maximum of 8 people in a very comfortable van along with your guide. Our guide Sara was very knowledgeable as well as warm and kind. She did amazing job making this day special for everyone. The ports and wines that we tried throughout the day were delicious. I can’t recommend this trip enough - it is worth every single penny compared to the slightly cheaper but more crowded and less beautiful tours available. Book it!!!

Best day ever!!! Hugo was awesome and so informative but most importantly made our day so fun! He took us to see all the excellent views which were stunning as well as two amazing wine tastings with an authentic huge lunch. Hands down the best day of our lives and are recommending to all our friends back home to go on Hugo’s tour and only Hugo’s tour, when there are many options you must choose this one. Many groups are quite larger and he keeps this one small which made it so fun to be able to have fun with the whole group. Also included was a beautiful boat tour with Port tastings as well. Do NOT miss this opportunity while you’re in Porto or close, this was the best day of our 10 day trip. We’ll be back!

Jean our guide was very knowledgable and easy to talk to. He made the experience really enjoyable and was able to give lots of information about port and how it is made and the different types. The meal was excellent with a white and a red wine to accompany it and port with the dessert.
This was a really enjoyable experience that I would recommend to others.
