The pickup/drop off to and from our hotel went very well. There was a long line to get through customs and board the ferry, which we were aware of. Once we were in Uruguay, we found the walking tour desk with no problem. However, we were asked to wait for approximately 45 minutes before the tour began, and then once our guide started we literally had over 30 people in our group and the tour was given in both English and Portuguese, which meant at every single stop we had to wait while both translations were given. We picked this tour because it was supposed to be a small group tour, which it was not. It would have been much more enjoyable if we had a smaller group and the tour was given in only one language. The town of Colonia is very quaint and worth a visit. The customs line in Argentina on the way back took almost 90 minutes, but our driver was waiting for us when we came out and got us back to our hotel with no issues. It was nice not having to try to get a cab or an Uber from the terminal because it was very crowded.

The process to get to Uruguay was smooth. Pick up was on time and we had a good van and driver. Th ferry ride itself was comfortable and the Uruguay guide was knowledgeable. It is stepping back in time when you visit the historic center.

The tour was okay, it consists of a private transfer from your accommodation to the ferry terminal and you will take the cruise yourself to Colonia. After that, you will look for your guide, which Colonia Express company operates. The tour was brief and short, and you will have around 3.5 hours of free time to explore before boarding the express ferry at 3.30 pm to Buenos Aires.

The tour was okay. But I gave 2 stars for the value it offers given the price of this tour. I was charged for around 130 USD for a "premium" day tour, for which if I were to book directly for the day tour package from the Colonia Express company website, I pay around ARS50,000 or less, which is around 60 USD. The only value-added service was the private transfer from my hotel, where I could get a round-trip taxi by myself for around 10 USD in Buenos Aires.

I will suggest to anyone to book directly with Colonia Express and with a bit of research yourself (e.g. arriving at the jetty 1.5 hours before the ferry departs, etc.), it will save you a lot of money.

Paying for the price was not an issue for me. The issue was that the value that I got was disappointing at such a price.

Tour was really crowded, mostly spoken in Spanish and not much context to takeaway. Pick up was good

Booked Viator tours in Amsterdam, Dublin, Buenos Aires and on. Always very pleased even when we had a no show guide in Bourdeau refund was prompt. A cab picked us up nice guy but not a BA tour guide. No direction where to sign in, long line in Colonia no direction. Tour guide toured 75% in Portuguese and 25% English. 90% of those being toured left before the end including us.

This is a beautiful little town, we enjoyed learning about its history. We had nice time. The boat ride was great. We were picked up on time and the tour guide did an excellent job on the walking tour, then we had time to ourselves to enjoy the town and had lunch.

This is a great day trip to see a different city and country. There are a lot of instructions that the company provides you beforehand but they are all useful. I didn’t the trip with transfers so I had transportation to and from the port. You have plenty of time in Colonia after the walking tour to eat and keep exploring and shop. It’s a full day though, around 12 hours.

This was the worst Viatour I have ever taken. And I use viatour for all my travels. First the guy who texted me the night before said “ follow all the instructions from the desk after the ferry ride” so we did get picked up from the hotel but were left at the ferry. No instructions no guidance nobody at the ferry counter spoke English. We went through 2-3 lines finally I had to use my google translate to communicate with someone who directed us into which line to stand in. There was ZERO help from viatour. I asked the texter he said “ follow instructions “ we got off the ferry and went to the day trip counter. Nobody spoke English and finally a lady came and told us to sit down and she gathered up many people to an area. We waited a long while. Then she directed us to a bus. Nobody at Viatour again to clarify anything.

We had no name, no contact and we just followed like sheep.

She took
Us on a bus showed us the bull ring, and the colonia sign. Most boring and uneventful. Her English was so bad and she knew nothing. She basically said
The Spanish and Portuguese both lived here never together about 23 times. We were all laughing on the bus. She knew nothing !!

Then she took us for a 10 minute walking tour. Same repetitive comments. She then told us how to get to the ferry at 4 pm.

I really think this was a thorough waste of money. USD $130 each for nothing. I have done tours in many countries. Book the ferry yourself and use google and you will learn more than this very bad viatour.

So disappointed with Viatour. I asked for a refund.

Thank you
Sarah

Wonderful day trip from Buenos Aires! The logistics were perfectly organized. Our driver picked us up from our hotel early in the morning and dropped us at the ferry. From there you are on your own to go through Argentine emigration and Uruguay pre-immigration and board the ferry. There is a snack bar inside the boarding area. The ferry ride was smooth and fast. We were instructed to check in at the appropriate desk in the Colonia terminal which was welcoming and easy. Our walking tour guide met us there and we spent an hour and a half with her learning about the history and culture of the area. She was very knowledgeable and happy to share her stories of local places of interest. We had a few hours of free time for lunch and museums - all very enjoyable. The ferry trip back ended in a lengthy and very warm immigration experience in the BA terminal. The line was really long and we were the better part of an hour getting through. Just plan for it and roll with it - it's part of life here! Nonetheless, our same driver from the morning was waiting patiently outside the terminal and took us right back to our hotel. Excellent service and a beautiful day all round. Highly recommend!
