Don Juan Tours Arenal is a family business that through its tours teach visitors the whole process behind two very important products worldwide, Coffee and Chocolate.
At this Coffee and Chocolate Tour, we will teach you the entire Coffee process, from the seed to the delicious cup of coffee.
Once the coffee tour is finished, we will start with the sweetest part of the tour, the delicious chocolate. Like coffee, we will talk about the entire Chocolate process, from the seed to the delicious chocolate bar and we will end up selecting some members of the group to grind the cacao beans and make their own chocolate bar. Once finished you will have the opportunity to taste several types of chocolate such as Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate.

Our guide was so knowledgeable, friendly and had a good sense of humour. He was able to answer all of our questions and was good at keeping conversations lively. Loved to learn about the Chocolate and making some! Although I don’t drink coffee, it was still interesting.

We enjoyed our tour. It was interesting to see the process to make chocolate and then make some ourselves. Our guide, Alex, answered all questions and was very personable.

We did the coffee and chocolate tour with Don Juan and had a really nice time. We did some hands-on things like making our own chocolate after grinding cocoa beans and planting a cocoa bean and a coffee bean. There were samples of both coffee and chocolate, and of course the guide was extremely knowledgeable about both. He even found a sloth on the property to show us, as well as a basilisk lizard! Both their coffee and chocolate is excellent, so we were happy that the tour ended in their shop so we could stock up on both. :-)

Everything I expected and wanted out of a coffee + chocolate tour. Our guide was so knowledgeable not only about the product but about the local flora and fauna as well. We had a great time tasting fresh coffee and chocolate.

We really enjoyed the Don Juan Coffee and Chocolate tour! Pickup and dropoff transportation were prompt and the location is a very quick drive out of central La Fortuna. When we arrived, we were encouraged to put on bug spray, so be sure to bring that.

The tour is on a paved and covered path through the forest, so this is a good activity to do if it's raining. As we walked, our guide pointed out various plants and even helped us spot a sloth at one point! At stations along the path, we stopped to learn about how cocoa pods are grown, harvested, and processed. Eventually, we stopped and got to make our own chocolate bars, grinding cocoa beans, mixing ingredients (sugar, milk, spices, vanilla) to personal taste, and forming into bars. Our guide also made us some "god's drink" (similar to hot chocolate) which we sipped before continuing for the coffee portion of the tour.

After learning about different types of coffee beans and how they are harvested and processed, we arrived at a station where our guide made delicious coffee that we got to sip in front of a beautiful view of the volcano.

We finished by sampling some different chocolates and other coffee/cocoa drinks, and buying all sorts of goodies in their gift shop.

Overall, the tour was fun, informative, and delicious!

We visited this as part of a group tour ( 24 people) of Costa Rica and it was a great activity.
The guide was well informed and had a good style of presentation. We learned a lot about their 3 main crops: coffee, cocoa and sugar cane. The demonstrations were interesting and there was time for tasting and interaction.

Our favorite tour during our stay in La Fortuna! Brian was an amazing guide. My partner and I booked the 8:30 am tour, and we were the only people at that time, so we had a date-kind of experience ☺️.
We learned a lot about Costa Rica, coffee and cocoa, we made our own chocolate and roasted our own coffee. We both loved it!!! Ahhh, and there are hundreds of options in a souvenir shop including coffee and cocoa wines, chocolates, bambamboo clothes, magnets, pictures, jewelry etc.
