Very knowledgeable guides. We would not have been able to spot all the animals they did without them. We saw 3 types of monkeys, a sloth, all sorts of birds and reptiles. If you like nature, I would recommend Jacamar as their guides are experts. Melany and Gustavo were wonderful. We paid a little extra for a private tour and had our own van and boat. The van was pristine and they had snacks and drinks for us. My daughter asked to stop for different snacks and they were very nice about it and stopped us at a market. The tour included a traditional Costa Rican lunch and I like that it wasn’t at a touristy restaurant, but rather at a quaint spot.

We also did zip lining with Jacamar the following day and it was a completely different experience as it was more of an adventure tour. I was impressed with how well staffed they were and how smoothly it went considering the amount of guests. There was a great ratio of staff to guests and the most well organized zip lining tour I have done.

I would recommend Jacamar.

We had a good boat tour of the Rio Frio in the Cano Negro Preserve near the Nicaraguan border. We saw lots of birds, 3 species of monkeys, caimans, lizards, etc. Our guide and boat captain were both knowledgeable. Although the tour was good, it was better when we took the tour 4 years ago with a really outstanding guide. There was a good Costa Rican lunch after the tour. Our driver on the trip from La Fortuna to the river was very fast and aggressive - not appropriate for a tour van. He was, however, a skilled nature guide and helped with the tour.

We did the private Cano Negro River tour with Jose as our guide. He was exceptionally knowledgeable about all things Costa Rican. He made the ride to the river go very quickly with his knowledge of Costa Rican history, culture and agriculture. On the river he and our boat captain had eagle eyes to see everything. We saw all three species of monkeys, caymans, iguanas and countless different birds. On the way back we had a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch. The entire day was perfect and exceeded our expectations.

This trip was amazing. It was very personal… Jose was an excellent guide from start to finish. He even pulled over to point out a Tuscan on our drive back home. He was so knowledgeable about everything from trees, wildlife, the food, history, and culture. If we could have him for every tour on our trip, we would! The lunch that Wendy prepared for us was delicious. Our boat ride with Abelino down the river was so surreal. It was an adventure that we will never forget! We saw sloths, crocodiles, howler monkeys, white face monkeys, Jesus Christ lizards, bats, and lots of species of birds! I highly recommend this tour!

Our last full day in Costa Rica was open. We had yet to see many of the wildlife on our trip checklist. The folks at the Jacamar office in La Fortuna advised this excursion would provide the best chances, so we booked. We were not disappointed. First, all of our previous excursion guides during the week were great. However, "Peka" from Jacamar was the absolute best and was extremely knowledgeable. He took significant time during the long van trip to the boat to enthusiastically educate us on all things Costa Rica and answer all our questions. Additionally, Alan (the boat driver) was a local from Los Chiles, who knew the river well and expertly piloted the boat to offer the best vantage points. We saw numerous Howler and White-Faced monkeys, many of which came within a few yards from the boat. There was also some Caiman, then both a Two-Towed and later a Three-Towed sloth. Not to mention the over abundant amount of interesting native birds. Our binoculars proved their worth and Peka allowed us to use his spotting scope to get some incredible pictures. Would recommend this excursion to anyone. Bring some good optics!

Joshua was such a knowledgable guide and "Jaylo" our great driver. it was totally worth the two hour drive from LaFortuna. We saw all three species of monkeys (a mutant ginger howler, white faced and spider). Cayman, long nosed bats, many species of birds and the Jesus Christ Lizard to name just a few of this river's incredible offering.
After the river tour, we visited the farm of Domingo where we learned the food journey
of sugar cane, to its juice, to molasses and then brown sugar. We then learned and
tasted coffee and chocolate. Both mind and body were thoroughly satisfied!

We HIGHLY recommend Jacamar Naturalist Tours. They have a partnership with the hotel we stayed at (Tabacon Resort and Spa), so it was easy for us to ask questions and book tours at the front desk and have them charged to the room. We actually did 3 tours through Jacamar, and while they were all wildlife tours, they each provided something different from the others.

Night Walk Tour - our guide was Gustavo, and he was fantastic! He made sure we were safe from any venomous creatures. We were able to spot a venomous coral snake crossing our path. We also saw a red eye frog (among many other different types of frogs) and various cool insects. I think we saw more than what most people see on this tour. It is the wilderness, so nothing is guaranteed in terms of what you may see. I think if you're not so lucky, you might only see insects a couple frogs. Definitely a unique experience though. We booked a shared tour, but we were the only group so it was essentially private.

Arenal Hanging Bridges tour - since this is one of the most popular sites in La Fortuna, this was a much bigger tour. It included people from other hotels. We were a van full of 20 guests but split into 2 groups. Our guide Alonso was AMAZING. He has such a strong passion and love for the wildlife and flora, pointing out every species of anything he could. He (along with all of the other guides) have an eagles eye for things. No idea how they can spot animals and birds from so far away. The guides had special telescopes. They took pictures through them for us, which was great. The walk is easy. There is some incline/downclines but nothing major. It's mostly a flat walk.

Cano Negro Tour - Gerardo was our guide and driver, and he was also fantastic. It is a long drive from La Fortuna, about 2 hours. We learned a lot about the various farms/produce grown in Costa Rica along the way. We also learned a lot about Costa Rican life and culture. Our boat captain Efrain also had an eagles eye for spotting wildlife on our boat ride. While we did spot a good amount of wildlife (including all 3 monkey species), I read that a lot more can be seen during the rainy season, especially for birds. The tour was still totally worth it, plus it came with a fantastic lunch at a family restaurant afterwards!

The guide/driver didn’t know how to get to the destination - we got lost so it took us 3 hours to get there.

The river safari was really cool. We saw plenty of wildlife but I wouldn’t say he was an expert on the wildlife either

The promised cultural meal experience at the end didn’t eventuate
