Lulu is an exceptional guide who patiently drove us to the bay, carefully guided us through the bay, explained bioluminescence and even pointed out constellations when there was a break in the clouds. Her enthusiasm about marine biology is infectious. The bay was gorgeous with lots of bioluminescence on a dark night and we spotted several large fishes that swam in the bay while creating large bioluminescent wakes. Expect to get a little wet and muddy from your waist downwards from kayaking and walking on mud but nothing crazy. Pick-up instructions are clear. Highly recommended tour if you are in Vieques.

The tour was incredible! It felt magical like something that would be in Avatar. John Carlos and Mario were the tour guides and were awsome. I was able to do this tour while 5 months pregnant, lots of other tours did not allow pregnant women. If you have a helpful partner that doesn't mind doing most of the paddling it's even more enjoyable. The tour guides were even more cautious and helpful with me because I was pregnant, so that was sweet of then.

It is almost impossible to get good videos or pictures of the glow.

HOWEVER, doing this tour requires planning for a hotel and getting the ferry tickets ahead of time. You definitely need to stay a night in Vieques because by the time the tour finishes there are no more ferrys leaving the island to the mainland. This was stated on the tour information. What was not stated was how hectic and unorganized the ferry is to get the tickets in person at Ceiba.

We got there at 12:20, 40 minutes before the ferry left and to wait in line took longer. By the time we got to the window the 3pm were sold out, even though online it said there were 3 available at the window. The window lady said it doesn't update on time. The next available time was at 8pm and out tour was at 7 pm and we were only staying in Vieques one night. She said we could come back before 3 pm to see if any seats had opened up.

We got lucky and got tickets to the 3pm ferry but it was very stressful not knowing if we were going to make it. The ferry is poorly run getting to Vieques. So get your tickets for the ferry and the hotel and the tour at the same time.

But the tour was incredible and so glad we were able to do it.

It was a neat experience with the water lighting up and the clear sky above. It was neat watching the light as the fish swam around.

Generally a good experience and I'd definitely recommend doing a bio bay tour at least once in your life. To get on the kayak you have to walk through smelly (sulfur?) and squishy mud barefoot, which luckily washes off easily. The one in Fajardo is cleaner and you kayak through mangroves to get to the lake, while in this one you're directly on the lake. Most of the time is spent either kayaking around trying to find the "hot spots" or stopped playing with the water.

Lulu was our guide and provided stories on how the bay was named, how the bio bay works, why the lights on the island are red, what stars are visible, etc. Generally very enthusiastic and superficially nice. I think for most people this would be a good enough experience and come out happy. However, I'd probably recommend trying another company though I don't have experience with them.

The bad:
While Lulu seemed nice in English, it was all show and in Spanish she was a completely different person. She'd tell you in English about how she loves her job soooo much and how the only reason she charges for it is because of the loading/unloading of the kayaks, but in Spanish she was much more negative. On the way to the lake there was a road that was very rough with many potholes. She said it was because of the Wildlife Refuge and they weren't allowed to bring in materials from outside to keep it "natural". The laws may have changed to make it true at the time, but I have my doubts since the rest of the refuge had plenty of road material (both stone and asphalt) that was obviously not natural.

We were one of the first groups out to the lake (several others soon followed) and she said it was so that we would have extra time to be there, but we ended up being the first group back. When we were outside she said we could stay as long as we wanted and at one point asked us if we wanted to stay longer. Everyone said yes, and immediately without a word she started kayaking back by herself. We followed her, thinking she was just repositioning since that had happened a few times (and we were told to keep together), but she went straight back to unload. So much for loving what she does, getting "extra" time, being able to stay long, etc. There were a few more things she said that seemed made up, so I'd take whatever she says with a grain of salt.

Very cool thing to do. The bio bay is definitely a unique experience and worth checking out. Our guide Lulu was great, very friendly and enthusiastic, and full of knowledge about what you get to see. This tour company was perfectly suitable to taking us out for the tour.

Just a note on photography and videography - it's nearly impossible to get anything worth keeping and while kayaking in the dark you may find yourself focusing too much on making sure you don't lose your phones/cameras. Probably best to leave them at home and just enjoy it with your eyes!
