Visit the Ayutthaya temples on a cultural day trip from Bangkok, it's a highlight of any Thailand visit. 1. Wat Mahathat
Wat Mahathat, “the temple of the Great Relic” was one of the most important temples in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Located on the historical island the large monastery features a huge central prang, a very large principal viharn and ubosot and a great number of subsidiary chedis and viharns. The upper part of its once massive central prang has collapsed. Today only the base remains.
2. Wat Phra Sri Sanphet
Wat Phra Si Sanphet, also known as the "Temple of the Holy, Splendid Omniscient" was the holiest temple in Ayutthaya during the Ayutthaya period and until the city was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. It was the grandest and most beautiful temple in the capital and it served as a model for Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.
3. Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit
Housing a large bronze seated Buddha image of 12.45 meters high (Phra Mongkhon Bophit), it was originally enshrined outside the Grand Palace to the east. It could be dated to the 15th and has a long history prior to being enshrined and to being covered nowadays with a Mondop. 4. Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam)
Wat Lokayasutharam is situated at Pratoochai District, behind the Ancient Palace and the Pratoochai Primary School, in the area 0f Wat Worapoh (Wat Rakhang) and Wat Worachettharam. Wat Lokayasutharam is 800 meters from Wat Phra Mongkon Bophit. Wat Worachettharam and Wat Worapoh are also closeby. Nevertheless, we had quite some difficulty finding Wat Lokayasutharam, likely our otherwise good Ayutthaya map, was a bit off the mark.

We stayed in Bangkok for just three nights and spent most of one day on this trip and cruise. It was certainly worthwhile and gave us a degree of insight into the country. The guide (First) was entertaining and helpful. The food on the cruise was very good and plentiful. The trip along the river revealed sights which would not otherwise have been accessible. The pick up from our hotel went without a hitch and the return likewise. Well worth the money.

Temples interesting and guide knowledgeable . After Angkor Wat they were less impressive than if we had seen them prior to Cambodia . River cruise was good .We were well looked after and catering was good .

This was a great excursion for those who like history and culture. Our guide, “Donna” was extremely knowledgeable and informative. She answered questions well and kept the group moving despite the heat. The river cruise back to Bangkok included a good lunch buffet with a mix of both Thai and western fare.

What an amazing trip. Our guide, First, was very knowledgeable, funny, engaging and took the time to answer all our questions. He explained the history behind the Wats in Ayutthaya and took us to the best vantage points before we had some free time.
The cruise was lovely and the buffet had lots of options to cater for everyone.

We had a great guide! The bus was comfortable and the food on the boat was tasty. The boat could have stood for stronger AC, but we’re in a heat wave so it’s probably fine normally.
