Dear okeikoJapan Miyajima, thank you very much for the great cultural experience we had at your lovely zen temple. It was great learning about the tea ceremony as well as customising our own lucky scoops using Japanese calligraphy. The treat was exceptional and we loved the pictures you took and shared with us after. Very recommended!

This was an amazing experience and a brilliant introduction to Japan. The friendly and polite staff help you dress into a Kimono of your choice and and take as many photos of you in their gorgeous garden as you please. You get to participate in a tea ceremony first hand and then enjoy a guided lesson on how to brew some yourself. The session ends with an introduction to Japanese calligraphy and you get to keep what you make as a souvenir. We would recommend this to adults who are looking for an authentic Japanese cultural experience in a quiet corner of Miyajima Island. The staff speak fluent English.

We took the tour in the second day or our stay in Japan, when visiting the Miyajima Island. Once we arrived to the Ferry Station, it was easy to find the place, using Google Maps in our phones. Walking through the narrow streets of Miyajima, allowed us to get an extra taste of the local environment.. we were even able to see some wild deers!.

When we arrived to Okeiko Japan for the Tea Ceremony, Kimono and Calligraphy experience, we were received by Keiko San and Yuka San, who were fantastic hosts. They were very kind to recommend very beautiful typical Kimonos and to help us to dress up.

The Tea Ceremony was solemn and very well explained by the Tea Master, who also taught us step by step to prepare some matcha tea, both in English and Japanese.

After we finished the Tea Ceremony, we were invited to visit the gardens of the Shrine at their facilities, were you can take fantastic photos!.

Yuka San and Keiko San, were very patient during the Calligraphy class, showing us the techniques, adequate posture and the use of the band to protect the Kimono's sleeves. We learnt how to draw our favorite Kanji and also to write our name in Katakana on a beautiful souvenir.

They were so kind also to allow us to practice our Japanese (which is very basic, by the way), making us to feel more confident for the rest of our trip.

Don't miss the opportunity to buy some of the souvenir available at the store, which are unique! (specially the beautiful deers in Kimono), so you can bring home a nice memory of the experience.

We definitely would love to take the experience again!.

Big thanks to Okeiko staff for a fantastic experience in Miyajima.

Best regards

Mónica and Juan

We had an amazing time here with kimono tryon, tea cermony and calligraphy! The staff were very friendly, patient and helpful. They also took many beautiful pictures and videos of us, and encouraged us to do the same. This was one of the best experiences we had on our trip to Japan.

What a beautiful experience. We absolutely loved it. A short walk up a quiet street and then you arrive at the serene location. Beautiful traditional garden and building with wild deer wandering past. We were a family of 2 adults and 2 teens and really enjoyed choosing and dressing in kimono (very special for the men and women). We then had a very tranquil and informative tea ceremony including trying ourselves followed by a calligraphy lesson. The hosts were very kind, patient and informative. The whole experience was just beautiful and we all left relaxed, happy and touched by the warmth of Japanese people and culture. I would definitely recommend. Such a contrast to the busy area and atmosphere near the ferry terminal.

Most memorable experience for my niece and me. Noriko-San shared our excitement as they helped us choose our kimonos and dressed us. They also patiently took lots of photos for us and let us take our time in the garden so we could take hundreds more! Highly recommended for girls of all ages!

After adventuring around Japan for a few weeks, my mom and I were pretty tired and wanted a rest day but had already booked this experience. We went back and forth on skipping it or not but ultimately we just decided to get on the shinkansen from Shin-Osaka at 6am and make our way to Miyajima. We are SO glad we did!! This was definitely a highlight of our trip! The grounds of the temple were so pretty and everyone was so friendly and welcoming upon us first showing up. We started by getting dressed in kimono (you get to pick from a few in your size), socks, obi, cord, flower etc all with help of course. For a girly girl, "dress up" is always fun, let alone learning and getting to put on something beautiful and steeped in culture and tradition. From there we had a great tea ceremony where we learned so many little intricacies of the tea ceremony from first watching and then by doing. We whisked our own matcha after learning the mannerisms. The tea bowls were by local artisans and absolutely gorgeous! After this, we went to the calligraphy room and practiced some kanji but also our names :) Throughout the entire cultural experience, pictures were being taken of us which is so appreciated. I definitely recommend this experience!

An excellent combination of activities in a beautiful place! We experienced a super interesting afternoon and great hospitality at Okeiko. It’s both serieus (the ceremony) and fun and interactive. The explanation in English was excellent so we have a better understanding of this part of Japanese culture now. Alle the (family) pictures taken were a great bonus and a lovely memory of this special day. Highly recommend!
