The dinosaur skeletons are impressive and the planatarium is attractive. Otherwise a very old fashion museum. Completely overloaded, musty, dark. Many of the animal specimens are almost unappetizing. A whole series of small mammals, for example, look as if they have been nailed to the wall. Museum design looks different.

We visited the museum much later than intended and were met with the pleasant surprise that, as there was only one hour left of opening hours that day, entry was free! We had a great visit and the exhibits are interesting and well looked after.

Obviously... with children aged 8 and 10 it was a treat! Super interesting, even if there are a lot of people, it's not oppressive.
You have to take the time to explore the countless rooms and mazes and immerse yourself in the past then discover the magnificent and majestic new wing.
There are must-sees that you don't see elsewhere... not to be missed!
Allow several hours...
Obviously, preferably plan a day with gloomy or even rainy weather.

We visited the American Museum of Natural History for the first time in many years. Our objective was to view a specific exhibition in the Northwest Coast Hall. We were so very happy to see it. Grounded by our Roots spotlights the work of five emerging Indigenous Northwest Coast artists. Each artist draws on tradition and teachings of their mentors, while expanding possibilities in form and personal expression. Their work is a fitting complement to the many displays of historic and traditional artifacts displayed in this hall to stunning effect.

The museum is vast and complex, with more than can possibly be viewed in one visit. We opted for the free highlights tour. We were very glad we did this. Our guide, a personable and knowledgeable volunteer, clearly loved the museum and her role, introducing its delights to visitors. We walked and listened for 75 minutes, learning about the history of the museum and its exhibits. We visited half a dozen exhibits and learned a few facts about each. Our guide also explained how each exhibit was organized, and suggested how a visit there could be most fully enjoyed. We finished the tour feeling impressed and grateful for a wonderful sampling of the museum’s richness and depth.

This place is a treasure. We will not wait so long to visit again.

Quite disappointed. We went there as a family with my granddaughters. No interactivities, no or very few explanatory videos. No tablet rental. The visitor is left to his own devices.
On the other hand, some of the staging is exceptional.

My son loves dinosaurs and the 4th floor fully satisfied his passion. The other floors have older exhibition rooms. Good for those who have children and want to spend some time indoors.

not bad, we came with several groups of students, so very noisy, but it's not bad at all...
A classic of natural history museums, (no better than the one in London)... To do if you are in New York, and the weather is not nice.
