If your main focus is on dinosaur bones, you may enjoy it more than I did. The mineral exhibit was good, but everything else was old, tired and unimpressive. The birds and mammals halls were depressing-I don't think they've updated them since I was last there in the 1970's. The insect area was nothing special and there was very little as far as children's activities. The best thing was dodging cars and trucks on the "freeway" that was projected onto the floor to show how wildlife has to try not to get hit when crossing the freeways. Don't waste your money on this museum when there are so many really good ones from which to choose.

Loved all the history of LA and the Dinosaurs. This museum has a little bit of everything for someone visiting LA for the first time. We spent 3 hours looking it over.

This is a excellent, classic natural history museum with terrific wildlife dioramas, a gem & mineral hall, Meso-American artifacts, and dinosaur fossils. There are several exhibits that reflect Southern California, particularly Becoming Los Angeles on the development of the area and the Age of Mammals, which features some of the prehistoric animals of L.A.

While not as huge as the major natural history museums of Chicago or New York, it's still quite big, and you can easily spend several hours wandering its halls. It's a popular museum, so expect crowds (especially families) on weekends or during school breaks. There is parking in the garage off Figueroa St, and it's really close to the Expo/USC station on the Metro E Line.

Overall, this is a really great museum featuring lots of local history, and it's well worth a visit.

Since the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum’s Butterfly Pavilion was closing on the 19th of this month, I decided to take my 9-year-old granddaughter there today. Be sure to go online and reserve day and time (only have 30 minutes in the Pavilion) before coming.
Since we arrived earlier than our reserved time, we went to the North American Mammals Hall where taxidermies of wild animals can be viewed in dioramas. The information plaque in front of the displays are educational. We also went into the Dinosaurs Hall where several life-size dinosaur skeletons are on display.
After being with the many fluttering butterflies in the Pavilion, we had lunch in the ground floor cafeteria.

Amazing collection of dinosaur fossils and the sheer size of the dinosaurs is mind blowing. It’s great that the kids got to see what they have only read in books.

The museum was cool. Go early for less people. Dinosaurs are rad. My favorite part was seeing Lucy. Felt kinda like seeing a rock star or something. Also had a nice lunch in the rose garden. At the very end of my visit I lost my phone. Yeah, totally screwed. The staff there were awesome about it even tough I was totally freaking out but trying to stay calm. A nice young staff member named Michael took sympathy on me and let me use their phone as a hot spot as I tried to use find my phone on my ipad. It was there on the screen just outside the museum but not moving. still couldn't find it. Asking people and feeling quite deranged. Eventually it was found, turned in at the gift shop. Faith in humanity restored. Highs and lows at the museum of natural history.
