This 3-hour Osaka Night Food Tour will take you on an unforgettable eating excursion through the busy streets and the hidden, less frequented parts of Minami (South) Osaka. Starting on the bright and busy Doutonburi area we will learn about Glico man, a Filipino sprinter named Fortunato Catalon who inspired a nation and a company! Similar to Shibuya (its counterpart in Tokyo) the lights and sounds of Dotounburi often lead you astray to overly-commercialized restaurants with queues of tourists outside. We want to take our guests to places they would certainly miss without a local’s guidance. We will take secret alleys not long after we begin the tour toward the shrine wedged out of sight from the average passerby.

Junko was a fabulous guide, very easy to talk with and very knowledgeable- we’ll always remember our tour. We got to sample some great food with hidden local restaurants we would never have found ourselves.

We did the Osaka food tour which was shockingly poor, with a distinct lack of food variety, information, professionalism or coordination. The only redeeming value was our fellow tour mates who were lovely to talk with.

Stop 1: octopus balls. Our guide purchased four containers of balls and distributed two to a family of four, and two to another couple; none to me and my husband. She then disappeared, so it was unclear if she was going to order more or if my husband and I should impose on the other couple’s food, which we ultimately had to do. Everyone had three balls each.

Stop 2: fried food spot. We were each told to order 4 pieces of fried food from a menu. The guide failed to order all the food, however, and when it arrived she did not know what was what or who ordered what. We had to try to identify our own orders and then spend extra time there as she ordered more food to compensate those people who didn’t get their ordered items.

Stop 3: An izakaya. Cute spot but extremely disorganized. One menu for 8 people (so ordering took a long time) and we were told to order one dish each. Not exactly a food tour when we are simply picking items that already appeal to us.

Stop 4: small dessert spot.

All in the food cost no more than 30gbp for me and my husband combined. Very little information or guidance about the food and extremely disorganized.

We took the Absolute Osaka Food Tour last night. I had trouble believing we were charged so much for such a tour. The food was average at best and accordingly to my calculations, only between 5 and 10% of the price we paid went into the purchase of the food. Nothing that you cannot eat on your own and truly overpriced. We started off with Takoyaki which were just okay - we had better ones the same day. We continued with Kushikatsu that was really heavy and greasy. While you could think that this is always the case for fried skewers, we could compare with some we had in Kyoto, and I can tell you that when well made they are very nice and can even feel light. The Izakaya we went to was a mix of everything - sushi, grilled squid, fried rice, fried Camembert (!) which is never a good sign - and the food itself was very bland. Frankly just judging from the menu we would not have gone there. The desert (dorayaki) was fine although we had it prior during the two weeks we had already been there. All in all, for this price you can get a fine dining experience in Osaka, so please do not waste your money and book yourself a nice restaurant!

The food tour was excellent! Melissa provided a variety of food in fun atmospheres. Her stories about the area and the origination of the food were both informative and humorous. We highly recommend!

I recently was on the Absolute Osaka Food Tour guided by Melissa and had an extremely fun, filling and informative evening. A combination of a wide selection of food (including the obligatory Takoyaki) and also learning more about Osaka itself including some very interesting stories especially one involving a mix of baseball, Colonel Sanders and the Dotonbori canal. I also enjoyed the different places we went to eat, most of which I'd never have frequented if left to my own devices. I’m also indebted to Melissa for her almost throwaway comment that in Japan maps don't alway have North pointing straight up, this helped me a lot when trying to find the correct exit in Shinjuku station the next day!

Visiting the knife shop was the most fascinating experience of the trip. We tried some interesting foods and some lovely restaurants, but we expected a few more short stops in standing places! Ike was knowledgeable and friendly.

Melissa was a brilliant guide. She was so knowledgeable not only about the food but also the Japanese culture, and was more than happy to answer our questions. As a result it was far more than a food tasting tour. We would highly recommend the tour with Melissa. The food was delicious - the best we had had in Japan and we tried things that we wouldn’t have otherwise. A top class, memorable, well run tour without a doubt.
