Start this tour in the original core of the city of Porto, next to the pilory in front of the Cathedral. Follow the directions of the expansion of the city, getting to know the places marked by the jewish presence and the contribution of this community to the development of this mercantile city in the first centuries of the country foundation. From Pena Ventosa till Ribeira, imagine yourself in the medieval city, whilst you walk through the oldest streets and see what is left of the city walls and other medieval buildings. Find out also the role that the
jews took during the discoveries and how three centuries of inquisition tried to erase theirpresence. Know the places of the old jewish quarters and how these are still imprinted in the city nowadays.
End up this tour appreciating a nice view to the river.

Ricardo was a knowledgeable leader whose passion for history and presentation style kept us engaged. The highlights were seeing the historical artifacts and his personal anecdotes about the sites we visited and his observations about Jewish experiences in Porto today. The most interesting highlight involved a visit inside a nursing home (won’t share what we saw because it’s better to find out in context of the tour)—but it was very moving.

Superb, informative walking tour. Ricardo was an excellent leader, open and forthcoming about challenges of giving a tour in the absence of a living and thriving Jewish quarter, with an impressive knowledge base and a good sense of humor. Highly recommended.

Really wonderful tour. Not much to actually see, so it was a lot of listening to our guide about the history of Jews in Portugal (and Spain) rather than seeing things. Our guide said that a similar tour in Lisbon would be repetitive so he didn't recommend doing both. But this was a great tour and I was pleased with our guide and the content.

This was an amazing and very educational tour from Ricardo about the Jewish history of Porto but more broadly Portugal. Ricardo spoke English extremely well, has a dry wit and sense of humor, and gave excellent history and some personal anecdotes that gave the tour a personal touch. For anyone interested in the subject, highly recommend!

This is a tour I have done before and I knew visiting friends would take great interest in it. We spent a beautifully sunny morning touring and learning about the history of the Jewish community in Porto throughout the centuries. Our tour guide, Ricardo did a great job of bringing the history to life for the group. He is very well versed in the history of the three different Jewish Quarters that existed in the past, and though much of it no longer exists he was able to point out evidence of the Jewish people who inhabited these areas and what became of these communities. Be prepared: there is a lot of walking, much of it uphill and/or up stairs. Wear comfortable shoes! If you are interested in Jewish history this tour is definitely worth doing.
