Vanessa gave us a very in depth informative tour of Porto Jewish history. The history covered ranged from the Roman Empire to 2023.

We had an amazing, thorough, educational, and fun tour of Porto and learned so much about Jewish history and architecture throughout the city of Porto. It was a fascinating experience and I would recommend it to anyone looking to learn about the Jewish roots of the city that could only be experienced with a tour.

There are not many buildings left to show the Porto Jewish community. However, our guide Vanessa. Was able to show us some hidden synagogues and other symbols that were left in the old Jewish quarters.

Ricardo was an excellent and informative guide. He educated us about Porto and Portugal's long and complicated history with Jews and antisemitism. Sadly, Portugal did an excellent job at erasing Jewish history during the inquisition, so little evidence of our existence remains to be seen.

The tour was during a very rainy day and even it was only 4 of us the guide did not skip anything; he showed us all the places where Jews were trying to observe Shabbat and prayed even after they were forced to become Christians, they were called New Christians and had to put crosses near the entrance door, which did not help at all; they were found by these crosses and killed during 16 century pogroms. Also we were showed a synagogue that was hidden for centuries and found during reconstruction in 20-th century.

We had a wonderful day with Rodrigo, a very engaging and knowledgeable young man. We walked (and walked— but leisurely and gently) up and down the old city of Porto looking for the hidden remnants of pre-inquisition Jewish community and then learned about 20th C. Jewish reemergence. Absolutely a worthwhile experience. Plus my wife thought Rodrigo was very cute.

Ricardo was a great tour guide and shared many interesting details about Porto’s Jewish history. However the tour operator was less than honest. I booked this tour several months in advance. Two days before our scheduled tour they indicated they had overbooked and asked if I could reschedule. When I declined they then contacted me late in the evening before the scheduled tour to say it was canceled. Luckily we had some extra time in Porto and were able to reschedule for the next day. Obviously the tour was not canceled but they overbooked.

Hidden parts of the city that we were unaware of. A true highlight was viewing the Torah Ark recently discovered in a renovation of a nursing home. Lots of interesting viewpoints along the way.
