My wife and I booked this trip for Thanksgiving 2023. We were both extremely pleased with every aspect. There are a lot of different booking options available out there, but at the end of the day we were fortunate to stumble upon Indo Travel Team. I'm very glad we went with them, and I can't imagine a better planned, guided, or adventurous trip.

COMPANY:
We chose Indo Travel Team after searching for packages because they were reasonably priced and other travel bloggers referred them. We've traditionally looked on Klook, but we've learned that those can be a crapshoot and you never know what you're going to get. They did a fantastic job with this package. Pierrick was extremely responsive and leading up to our trip replied to my emails very quickly and always on the same day. Once we were picked up, we didn't have to do much thinking at all because everything was so well planned out. We were also pretty nervous since this was our first trip to Indonesia, but everyone we interacted with was extremely professional and courteous. Even those who weren't part of Indo Travel Team.

LODGING:
You'll stay at 2 hotels during this trip, both of which have WiFi. The first, at Mt. Bromo, is on the edge of the caldera and the scenery is gorgeous. This hotel is at high altitude (2,000+m) so it can get chilly, but the rooms are warm and comfortable. They make it clear that this package is for adventurers, so this hotel is not a resort. But we hiked Mt. Fuji last year and we slept on the floor of a shared hut with 40+ strangers, so having our own room on Mt. Bromo was great. The next lodging, for Kawah Ijen, was a traditional western style hotel. It was much hotter at the second location, but the hotel had WiFi and A/C, so it was very comfortable. You'll only be at each hotel for a short while anyway, so we were surprised at how comfortable they were.

FOOD:
You'll be given so much food over these few days. We never even touched the snacks we packed. You'll be provided dinner the night before Mt. Bromo, coffee/snacks while hiking Bromo, breakfast after Bromo, lunch en route to Kawah Ijen, dinner before Kawah Ijen, and then a huge breakfast after hiking Kawah Ijen. We never really had a chance to get hungry before we were served the next meal. Everything was absolutely delicious, and you can tell the guides put a lot of thought and effort into each meal.

TRAVEL:
We flew into Surabaya to save on travel time and were driven to Mt. Bromo. This was about 2.5 hours, versus 8+ hours from Bali. Our driver, Faiza(?) was great and told us all about the countryside and mountains, and answered many of our random questions. After Mt. Bromo you'll be taken to Kawah Ijen, which can take several hours. This is a trek for adventurers after all. You'll stop for lunch on the way and the driver can stop for any needed break, so we had plenty of time to stretch our legs. After Kawah Ijen you'll be taken to Bali and traffic in Bali dictates this travel time. We took another 6-7 hours. This may be a lot of riding in a minibus, but the scenery really is gorgeous. I never knew just how many volcanoes Indonesia has and you'll see dozens along the way. You'll turn a corner and see a towering, 10,000' behemoth belching smoke. It's really stunning.

HIKING:
Hiking Mt. Bromo was the easier of the two. You'll shove off around 3am and visit two locations; Mt. Bromo's rim and King Kong Hill. each hike takes about 30 minutes each? Give or take 10-15 minutes. Kawah Ijen is definitely more challenging, but I wouldn't call it challenging. You'll leave the hotel very early, around 1am, and then begin the hike at ~2:30am. You'll have to crest the rim and descend into the crater, so this hike takes longer, about 1h30m. We were extremely lucky and the blue flame was quite large, but there was also a lot of smoke. The gas masks realllly helped. The guides know all the best photo spots and will take plenty of photos along the way too.

LUGGAGE:
I couldn't find definitive information about storing luggage when I was searching, so I want to include it here for others. We had luggage with us the entire trip and we never felt like it was unsecure. At Mt. Bromo it stays in your locked hotel room while hiking. However, you will take it with you when hiking Kawah Ijen since you won't return to the hotel. Your luggage stays with the driver in the minibus and we had no issues whatsoever and felt comfortable the whole time.

An exceptional and unique experience. Breathtaking landscapes.
Everything has been thought of so that each of the 3 days goes as smoothly as possible. Delicious local meals.
The Indotravelteam team is very professional.
Pierrick, the head of the agency, was very available before our trip, very responsive by email (despite the time difference) and responding precisely to each of our questions.
A big thank you to Alex, our French-speaking guide who is passionate about his job, who contributed to the good humor during these 3 days of excursion.

What an incredible experience! It would have been a big mistake in our trip not to spend these few days with the Indotravel team and the other travelers. Clear information from start to finish on the route, always accurate and fast responses to our emails, a wealth of information on volcanoes and Indonesian cultures, always clear safety instructions, incredible tempeh skewers and above all, above all, the permanent sympathy of Alex and Pierrick as well as all their guides, drivers and local collaborators.
Certainly the journeys can seem long, but when you want to discover more about Indonesia and other travelers, it only seems to be a few minutes. Although the accommodation is presented as rustic, it remains completely correct and in keeping with the nature of the trip.
A trip that keeps its promises, and great encounters to boot.

Special mention to Tour Leader Alex and the participants, who knew how to make this trip even more enjoyable.

We did this tour with friends and we were amazed. We dreamed of it, talked about it for months and we were not disappointed with the experience.

In terms of communication and organization, nothing to say, we communicated with Pierrick by email and we always had answers very quickly to our questions.

Concerning the tour, there are certainly a lot of hours spent on the road and this is in no way the fault of the organizers because these places are deserved (you have to know what you want). Moreover, we were informed in advance of the entire program and the approximate travel times (we understand why it is approximate when we see the traffic on the roads and especially in Java).

We found the three hyper days well organized. In terms of meals, we had enough to eat, in terms of accommodation we expected worse but we were pleasantly surprised. It's not great luxury (especially in Bromo) but we had hot water. We had briefings before each climb at Bromo and Kawah Ijen. Of course when we hear certain things and warnings it can scare or ask questions but it is good to remember that these are active volcanoes and that it is not without danger and that there are instructions to respect. At no time did we feel unsafe, on the contrary we were well informed and prepared. We even found the steps easier than the difficulty announced by the organizers (all the better since we were well conditioned).

We had Arthur as a guide (He Is the Best!), a wonderful person, always checking if we are well or if we feel comfortable at times which can be tricky in terms of walking for some. He provided us with a lot of information and explanations about the local culture and the places we were going to visit. Ok it’s his job, but we felt he was really involved for us. Everyone was friendly, the guides, the drivers, the organizers, there was such an atmosphere in our group that it was difficult to say goodbye and part ways with the other participants.

We forgot some souvenirs in our hotel room in Bromo and Pierrick kindly organized a return of our belongings to Bali.

To conclude, we really recommend Indo Travel, some will say that it is more expensive than elsewhere. Maybe ? but we were happy that everything was organized for us and not having to do it ourselves (you have to go there to understand why). We provide you with gloves, hats, jacket if you don't have one (after all, that's not really what we bring in our suitcases in Bali), flashlights, gas mask for the descent into Kawah Ijen … We plan to return to Indonesia and we will without hesitation use Indo Travel to organize another tour (Can we have Arthur again?).

Thank you once again.
