Rio's first pacified favela, Santa Marta is one of the few that is safe and accessible to tourists, with tours designed to attract attention and investment to help improve safety and conditions.

Just knowing that the king of Pop was there was enough for me to get emotional. The statue of Michael is beautiful and accurate. The guide very helpful and kind.

Started off shaky the company not the guide but the company themselves gave me the wrong address. So I ended up an hour away. However, once I got there the tour was amazing. The guide knew the area well and explain everything. I would say if you go be prepared to climb many stairs

Jonathan was a great tour guide. Informative and insightful. Make sure you pack comfortable shoes. We did. We had a great time.

This place has its own magic. We even danced to "They don't care about us" and walked the path of The King of Pop.

It was an unique experience.
Our guide took us to see this Favela inside and I think it was the most important experience. Walking through the path that Michael Jackson went was also very interesting. Overall great experience, tour guide was very helpful.

Salete took us round her favela which she had lived in for 40 years. Everyone was really friendly. The favela has its own funicular to get to the top, and a few stops on the way up. The people all seemed content, it was very community oriented and there were lots of projects (adult education for free to learn many different languages) there were clubs for the kids in percussion, theatre, obviously football, music and even a gardening project. There was even a running track to keep fit. Yes the properties were close together, but very colourful. They had made the most of what they had - and all the cats were extremely well looked after - and fat!
