The Mayan Cacao Company is a fascinating place to discover the secrets of chocolate making. As an excursion on a Disney cruise, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of cocoa and learn more about the history, cultivation and processing of cocoa.

Our guide led us through the facility, first talking about the time of the Mayans and how they used cocoa, which was also accompanied by a very interesting video. Then we passed various plants that are important for cocoa processing. You could have your photo taken and then we went to the chocolate production, where you could also taste it.

Afterwards you could buy various drinks with cocoa at the bar or buy chocolate in the shop, which is very high quality.

After that we visited the Bee Sanctuary and the Tequilaria.

We visited The Mayan Cacao Company during a cruise stop in Cozumel. Our tour guide, Paty, was very kind, informative and engaging with
both parents and kids. She was very knowledgeable, sharing fun anecdotes and answering questions along the way. The kids, ages 5 and 11, both enjoyed making (and of course eating) their own chocolate and we all enjoyed learning about the ancient Mayan culture and traditions. We loved the experience and would highly recommend a stop on your next vacation. Thank you, Paty!

We got a private tour with Patty and it was fabulous and delicious! Just my hubby and I. VERY interesting the history of cacao. Patty made us a sample of it. VERY tasty! We then got 2 drinks at the bar - a chocolate daiquiri and a chocolate mudslide. BOTH were delicious. We then got to try samples of the candy bars and were able to pick out our favorites. We had to buy more on the way out of town since they make perfect gifts! Highly recommended. Very relaxing area. Fun gifts.

We had a wonderful time at the chocolate workshop. Eduardo was so kind, funny and helpful. There were six of us in our group, including two kids. We got to learn some really interesting facts about the important role of cacao in Mayan culture. We enjoyed a corn tortilla with chocolate mole and finally a super fun session making some chocolate. It was great to learn about the different spices and ingredients added, using things we can find at home in Canada. Thank you Eduardo for the awesome experience.

This was a guided tour for the whole family. We learned the origins of cacao and its importance to the Mayan culture and history of the development around the world. "Senior Willy Wonka" showed us herb plants that went into traditional cacao and how the cacao was grown. He was a fun and animated guide. We tasted fresh chocolate mole on fried tortillas made on the grill from his grandmother before the highlight of the tour. We were placed in front of traditional stone slabs with stone rolling pins and given a handful of roasted cacao beans to crush and roll along with Mexican honey and spices. Once finished, we placed the mixture into a small container to mold it into a circular disk wrapped with wax paper to take home. No milk added so no worries about lactose intolerance. We were able to ramble about after that to look at the beautiful sculptures and herb plants. The tour lasted about an hour and we learned about Mayan traditions. Good to do for everyone.

My wife and I had so much fun learning to make chocolate. And it’s only an hour which makes it an easy thing to do and still have plenty of time left for beach and chill: This is a very touristy experience. So it’s only fun if you allow yourself to go with the schtick of it all. Put on the chef’s hat, laugh at the amazing guides chocolate jokes and in the end you will delight in having made your own chocolate to take home.
