Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Meteora, a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries on this private full-day excursion. Departing from Athens, pass through the scenic towns of Amphissa, Lamia and Trikala before arriving at Meteora, the name Meteora is used to define any rocky plateau or steep rock formation. The monasteries were built between the 14th and 19th centuries, their location was chosen carefully so that the monks could be as close as possible to God.

Toils was such a nice driver, friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the places he took us. Provided us with cold water, and was a safe driver. Delivered us as close as possible to the places we wanted to see, and picked us up when we were through. Never rushed us through anything and took us off the beaten track. He also took lots of pics of us. So nice to be able to get there before the tour buses arrived. Tolis took us to the cutest restaurant in the small town near Meteora. Would highly recommend Tolis, and the visit to the Meteora Monasteries. It was definitely the highlight of our five night visit to Athens. Thank you Tolis.

We were picked up on time at our hotel and immediately felt comfortable with our guide Alex. On our way out of Athens he offered some history and pointed out monuments as we passed. The 4 hour ride went quickly, Alex allowed us time to sleep and also gave many facts about the countryside as we passed. This was during the heatwave last week and he made sure we had plenty of water and started w the easiest monastery to enter first. He offered suggestions as to which ones we might want to visit, took us to scenic spots for pictures and was always waiting when we exited. We elected to see 4 monasteries and he didn’t rush us to get back on the road as we had heard of some other tours. We then went into town and had a delicious lunch at a place he recommended. On the long ride back we stopped at Thermopylae and took pictures and he told us the historical significance of the site and the hot springs. Also, we had shared some of our itinerary in Athens and he text us later to give some recommendations on places we mentioned. Would certainly recommend using LS Tours and specifically Alex. We were worried about the long day and the heat and Alex made the experience easy and memorable.

It’s a long review, but if you’re interested in this adventure, do your an It’s a long review, but if you’re interested in this adventure, do yourself a favor and read it.

Excellent experience from start to finish. Communication was great before the trip even started. They let us know who and when we would be picked up and were even accommodating when we wanted to start a little later. Alex picked us up right on time. He was very pleasant to talk to along the way on our 4 hour trip. We stopped at a nice little rest area and got some what we believe were authentic Greek goodies. The ride went by fairly quickly and was filled with beautiful scenery. Fast forward to Meteora.
Words cannot describe what we saw. Some reviews said they weren't that impressed and all I can say is holy cow man these monks built these amazing monasteries on top of these wonderful and God created rock formations a really long time ago and six of them are still standing and what an accomplishment. Pictures do not do it justice either. You have no idea what it's like unless you're there. The views on the way up the mountain were breathtaking and I'm a dude that rarely says "breathtaking". Alex was so very warm and friendly allowing us as much or as little time as we wanted to take pictures, tour the inside the monasteries and he gave us lots of information so we could decide which monasteries we would tour. Some are difficult to access and others are very easy. He laid it all out for us so we could make our own decisions. We eventually finished the tour and headed down to Kalambaka for dinner in a wonderful little outdoor cafe on the main road with a pretty fountain and lots of nearby shops. The only thing we would change is to plan an overnight trip and stay the night in Kalambaka. It was a great little village. The food at this cafe (i cannot remember the name but look for a beautiful fountain on the main road) was really good and the bathrooms must be the cleanest in Greece. If you don't know, that part of the world has awful public bathrooms and honestly I can't understand that but it is what it is, they are gross to say the very least. I wouldn't let my dog poop in most bathrooms that I saw out in public. This was not just Greece, Israel, Turkey... all awful. Except for this little cafe in Kalambaka. Cleaner than the best ones I have seen in the US. Ok enough about bathrooms. After we ate we got some more goodies at a small local bakery and they were really good. The place was on the corner directly across from the cafe'. I really do wish we had more time in Kalambaka but the day was already so long and Alex was probably ready to get home to his family. Even though we started later in the day than normal Alex still made sure we still had the full experience. We stopped by to visit Thermopylea and a hot spring then headed back to Athens. Don't get me wrong it was a long day but well worth it and we would pay more if we knew what a great time it would be. Do yourself a favor and if you have time do the two day tour or at least spend more time in Kalambaka. It was a wonderful little town and I would live there one day and run a little cafe' with a fountain when I retire. If my wife would come with me. It was truly a great time and Alex had a lot to do with it. We will always consider him our friend. Ask for Alex

Michael picked us right on time at 7am and was the best host! Even though it was a very long day (13 hours!), he was in high spirits all day and was eager to help us with anything we needed. He answered all our random questions about Greek culture and helped my husband with his Greek grammar questions. He recommended a great restaurant in Kalambuka and my whole family agreed it was the best meal in Greece. I even texted him the next day to follow up on a loukamades restaurant he recommended and he immediately responded and sent me the address. Above and beyond service. Thank you, Michael, for a great time in Meteora! I highly recommend this tour.
