You will discover the amazing story of the rise to power of the Romanian communist party and the unparalleled cult of personality of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. You will learn how Ceausescu’s craving for applause and recognition led to his overturn in the most violent anti-communist revolution of 1989.
On a tour full of contrasts you will see a communist district built for the elites and one designed for regular working-class families, and learn about day-to-day life during communism, the economy, the propaganda, the relationship with religion.
You will explore the New Civic Center and the exterior of the Palace of Parliament and learn about the achievements of Romanian architects, but also the sacrifices for the local community as the old architecture changed so much during the 1980s.
You will also have an honest conversation about the present-day socio-political movements in Romania and its future as a member of the European Union.
You will finish the walk near the old town.

Elena was so knowledgeable and pleasant. We learned a lot of Bucharest and Romania. Taking Metro and Tram was an added bonus to this walking tour. Highly recommend!

Elena is an excellent guide. She is very friendly and knowledgeable, not just on the subject of the tour but also general Romanian history. She brought us to interesting places we never would have experienced on our own. She happily answered all our questions and recommended an amazing traditional Romanian restaurant. She truly went above and beyond during the day and her tour is a major highlight of our trip.

We were so lucky to have Elena as our tour guide! She is so knowledgeable about the communist period of Romanian history and was a political science major in college; we asked so many questions, and she had all the answers! She also speaks incredible English and was extremely flexible with whatever we wanted to learn/do. She also gave us incredible recommendations as well about other things to do around the city! This was one of the best tours I’ve been on. The guide was very knowledgeable and insightful. We learned a lot about what it was like living under communism and how the impacts are still being felt today. I would highly recommend this tour.

I had the recommendation from employees of our company. Elena appeared on time, we started our tour directly from the hotel lobby. The tour was very interesting, the tickets for the Ceaușescu house were booked by her. The most impressive was that Elena is burning for her country and her city. And she’s smart in explaining thing. Very nice English, better than mine. Keep going Elena you’re a great personality!

We enjoyed our tour with Elena.
She met us at our rented apartment and we took the Metro together to get downtown.
She helped us to understand the history of Romania over the last 100 years - focusing on the impacts of the communist regime. She shared photos with us which helped us comprehend some of the changes which occurred.
We covered a lot of ground - but were not rushed - we even had a few rest stops!
I’d recommend that you book a private tour with Elena. She can share with you in the first person as her family lived through the experience of the communist regime and it’s impacts.

Elena brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to this well organised and informed tour of the main communist era sights in Bucharest.
She combined a personally friendly and approachable style with excellent factual informaron and visits which were off the beaten track.
I fully recommend her walking tours.
