Who are those luxuriously dressed people, painted by young Rembrandt? What were they doing, eating and drinking? How were they different from the ordinary citizens, that were painted by Frans Hals or Jan Steen?
What were the favorite taverns among locals in the Golden Age time? What games were they playing? Why were they wasting their savings in the anatomical theatres?
Let’s figure it out!

We will dive into the Golden Age time to find out what was happening here and how these events influenced the national character of the Dutch. We would like to discuss with you different subjects you are interested in, whether it is Dutch art in its historical context, the development of maritime trade routes and the Dutch East India Company, the role of Dutch women in society, or even the daily life of local people.

Sasha did a great job showing us many of the highlights of Amsterdam. We have 3 daughters ages 17, 18 and 20 and our family has mixed interests from history, art, architecture and all the popular spots that my daughters see on social media. He did a great job trying to cover all bases and even adjusted the tour to accommodate my daughter’s request to get a fresh stroop waffle (which was amazing and which we returned to on our last day of our trip to enjoy again). I Would highly recommend him as a tour guide and would definitely hire him again if we were to return to the Netherlands!

Amsterdam is a city I visit every month and every time I discover new places. On my next trip I decided to try a solo tour with Diana. And you know, it was like rediscovering the city. Learned so many interesting facts, places, inconspicuous sights, cool restaurants and stories about history of city. I went on the tour assuming I knew the city pretty well, but it turned out I didn't know it at all) Thank you Diana, it was super!

This was a wonderful introductory tour of Amsterdam and an absolutely perfect prelude to visiting the Rijksmuseum.

We initially selected this tour because of Snark.Travel’s flexibility in coordinating the start time with the mid afternoon arrival of our cruise ship. The communication with the office staff in advance was excellent; we weren’t just receiving automatically generated emails, we were communicating with real staff members who asked questions about our interests and ensured we were set up for a perfect tour experience.

And that is just what our guide, Sasha, delivered! We had a wonderful time learning about the history of this fascinating city, the canals, the architecture, the economics and some of the city’s most famous artists. We started with a stop at a site from the golden age of the Dutch Empire (and one of only two remaining wood structures), In’t Aepjen. What a perfect location for my husband’s first draft beer in Holland!

Sasha took us to locations that provided meaningful context for our visit to the Rijksmuseum on the following day. For example, he took us to where Rembrandt lived, trained and worked. Sasha supplemented his commentary with some really good visual aids. These illustrations allowed us to stand in front of a building and visually compare what we were seeing to how that same building looked In Rembrandt’s day. And the photographs of some of the most famous pieces from Dutch artists gave us guidance in what to look for at the museum.

We could not have asked for a better introduction to this wonderful city. We happily rate Snark.Travel and our wonderful guide, Sasha, five stars!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND
