My 18 year old daughter and I loved this batik class. We thought it was a great way of exploring the culture and learning about a new art form.

Kamal was very accommodating and we loved the air conditioned studio. He has recently switched to a larger bandana size instead of a handkerchief size, which was great.

We drew our designs lightly on the fabric in pencil, then traced them in hot melted wax, which was the hard part. Mistakes will be made by beginners, guaranteed, but you have to learn to adapt them into your design and move on. Then you add color. It was a bit like doing watercolors, with some similar techniques for creating color gradients. I loved that part, the colors blend in beautiful ways.

Overall, it was a terrific experience. I think it was a bit frustrating for the 9 year old who came with her mother, a little older might be better, but it also might depend on personality and art experience. I don't want to discourage kids. I just think it is going to be even more challenging for them than adults and perfectionists won't enjoy it as much.

Definitely worth doing!

It was a really immersive experience in the malay culture! Our teacher was really helpful. He shared solid information and guided us through the whole process. He is a friendly person and really connects with you easily. What i would really love for the future is for the activity to last a little bit longer, as i felt that the 2 hours weren’t quite enough. It is an experience i strongly recommend if you were to visit Singapore!

We met Kamal ot his air conditioned studio/classroom at the cultural center. We arrived via MRT subway and bus and described exactly in the listing. This is a vibrant neighborhood worth exploring.
Kamal gave us an understanding of the history behind batik and the tools and processes used to create it. He is a patient and observant teacher who clearly loves this artistic medium. His works line the walls and offer inspiration.
We drafted our handkerchief size designs and got to work applying wax and dye. It is a very satisfying method.
In the end we created pieces that reflect our individuality and will serve as a reminder of our time in Singapore. We thank Kamal for providing so much insight to the craft and to the spirit of Singapore and the region.
If you are at all artistically inclined, or just curious about batik, this is a super way to spend an afternoon.

It was a therapeutic session to create the art piece and we were creating on a bigger canvas to be used as a bandana. Lovely and intimate session with 3 other participants during our time slot.

Kamal is very knowledgeable with Batik, and it was a great learning experience. He guided us patiently to learn how to control using the tjanting to create our own artwork, and was warm in sharing his knowledge of batik. He gave us many useful tips in selecting a good piece of batik. It was a very enriching experience and we would love to come back for more classes. Thank you Kamal!

My friends and I try to do some kind of local craft class where ever we go. This was a fantastic experience Kamal was a very kind and patient teacher. We learned a lot about the history of Batik along with the basic techniques.I was amazed to be leaving the class with a finished work. No need to be a great artist to achieve great results. The whole experience was relaxed, fun and interesting. My only negative is that I was not able to do some more classes with him. We will definitely look at what is available on any future trips to Singapore
