1. Zaanse Schans
Here we have the opportunity to visit the best windmills in Holland. In the Seventeenth Century the Zaanse Schans was the biggest industrial area in the world. A Dutch windmill basically was a little factory. Each windmill was custom build for producing various products like paint, cooking oil, paper and wood. On the bank of the river Zaan hundreds of windmills were grinding, pounding, sawing and crushing. Products of the Zaanse Schans were exported all over the world. The dozen windmills on the Zaanse Schans are still fully operational. On a good windy day we’ll see them turning at full speed. Entrance to one of the windmills is included in this tour.
2. Simonehoeve
At this family owned cheese farm they tell you everything you always wanted to know about cheese and wooden shoes. Of course there is a large variety of cheeses to taste from as well as fruit whine and typical Dutch cookies and you can buy your favorite cheese, clogs and all kinds of souvenirs.
3. Volendam
Volendam is build on a dike next to het IJsselmeer and is famous for the picturesque harbor. The old fisherman’s quarter is called the Maze. It’s a labyrinth of alleyways and dwarf sized houses. Volendam is perfect to try some Dutch seafood. Most famous is raw herring with pickles and onions. It’s not as bad as it sounds. It’s actually very tender and tastes a bit like sushi, only fishier. Most of our guests actually finish it! Another dish is kibbeling, battered and deep fried pieces of codfish served with tartar sauce. Volendam has a pretty large variety of bars and restaurants where it’s possible to try local beer and/or have lunch.
4. Marken
Marken used to be an island in the open sea but now it’s a quaint peninsula in the fresh water lake IJsselmeer. Several houses and even small neighborhoods are listed as national cultural monument and here it’s also possible to have lunch, in a cafe on the waterside.
5. Monnickendam
Monnickendam is one of the oldest towns in Holland and incredibly beautiful. We drive through the old center passing the old church with it’s amazing bell tower and watch typical Dutch vessels in the harbor.
6. Waterland
Waterland is called the wetlands of Amsterdam, with old villages, fields and hundreds of ditches. It’s a landscape with narrow waterways called ‘sloten’, meadows, reeds, cows, sheep, horses and birds, farms and church towers on the horizon. This area is mostly peatland and also full of lakes. The landscape does not get more Dutch than this anywhere else.

In the centre of Waterland is the village of Broek. Although it's only a fifteen minutes drive from Amsterdam, Broek in Waterland feels completely different from the cosmopolitan city. Most of the old houses, farms and even the church were made out of wood. Stone buildings were too heavy for the soft soil. There are still many beautiful large wooden houses with gardens full of flowers. It’s very peaceful and quiet and we’re pretty much the only touroperator that goes there because large busses with tourists are not even welcome.

We had the opportunity to tour a working windmill, a cheese factory, a wooden clog maker, and several small villages and towns. Loved all of it!

Our guide was very knowledgeable, always telling us interesting things about the sights, the history of the Netherlands, the culture, and the people. Everything we saw was very interesting, and certainly there were many things we would not have seen or learned if we had not taken this tour.

This was the best experience we had in Europe! Philipe did a phenomenal job taking us around to see the areas that are less traveled. He has so much knowledge and experience and knowledge… and we were thrilled to spend the day with him. I don’t think you would want to be with anyone but him to tour the Netherlands !

Our tour with Philip was the highlight or our trip. He is so knowledgeable and through his expertise and experience he shared his love of The Netherlands so generously with us. He also took the time to get to know our tweens and their interests and include them as well. Grateful we had the honor to tour with him!!!

Our private tour guide Phil was wonderful. He tailored our tour according to our interests. We saw the real countryside around Amsterdam and not the places only tourists go.Each place we visited Phil seemed to know the people there and we were treated like family. GREAT tour.

Our guide, Phillip, was the perfect guide - interesting, informative, entertaining, funny, fabulous driver, and so attentive to our needs (two in party with accessible needs) . We learned so much, saw so much and experienced so much of Holland in our day long tour. We fell in love with the Holland you won’t see on the big tour bus trips. And Philip’s stories and knowledge of the history, the people, and the area made this day so very special. You will love this tour with Phillip!

Jan shared with us several sites in Amsterdam. We only had one day there after departing our cruise ship and it was a great overview and exactly what we requested. A highlight was the "snack lunch" on the picture perfect lakefront followed by gelato. He was very accomodating in adjusting the schedule and picking us up at our hotel and dropping us off downtown at the end of the tour. I only rated as a 4 because we needed a large van for 7 people. It was noisy in the back so we could not hear all his narrative. Despite that we throughly enjoyed the day.

We loved our private tour. Our guide, Teun, was absolutely delightful, friendly, and knowledgeable. He was even very patient as I had the date wrong and wasn’t ready at 9. We saw all the things and more that the trip promises and the best part was avoiding the crowds. He knows the locals and we could wander places a big tour couldn’t. We learned so much about Dutch history. I’ll never look at a windmill the same again!! We HIGHLY recommend this tour. Best part of our vacation so far. 👏👏
