Our family of 7 was looking forward to a day off the resort to see the town Hiquey. It started poorly and ended poorly. We waited at the designated meeting point on our resort for over half an hour. I texted the driver and Viator to determine what the problem was. He never responded. He finally arrived. We had a two year old with us and found there to be an inadequate car seat for him. Not willing to put him at risk three of the party aborted to stay behind with him. When we arrived at the church, which was high on our list of things to see we found that there was a mass going on and we were not allowed to enter the church. This is something the tour guide should have known. We then told him we would like to go to a store for local Dominican arts and crafts. He took us to a store that he referred to as a Dominican Walmart. Definitely not what we were looking for. We decided we were done and told him my daughter was ill and returned to the resort. We were refunded for the 3 people who stayed behind. WCould this have been a great trip, yes, I think so. Other reviews were positive. Maybe we just had bad luck.

This was not a guided tour as advertised, but a drive through the country with a very nice driver who spoke some English. The "marketplace" was a stereotypical tourist trap with the same jewelry, coffee cups, and t-shirts that you see everywhere, just a bit more expensive here. The tour of the Basilica was supposed to be included but cost extra - and the guide, who was difficult to understand, asked for a tip after the 10 minute tour. The Basilica was beautiful, and the old church in Higuey is a must see, but give the Higuey City Tour Real Life in Punta Cana a pass.

I really enjoyed the tour! The trip to the local elementary school was the greatest experience! The children were amazing! Also, the trip to the typical house and farm was interesting. I learned so much about the culture and local crops. Finally, the driver was so nice and accommodating.

This tour was wonderful, they picked us up on time, the tour guide was courteous, the stops were interesting, the people at the gift shops were not pushy, we felt safe at the tour stops. The only reason I gave 4 stars in stead of 5 is we asked for an English speaker and he did not, other then that I definitely recommend

Our guide Diomedes (sorry if I spelt it wrong!) was great. He helped us practise our Spanish whilst telling us about the sites we were visiting and the wider Dominican Republic life, economy, places etc. We visited a coffee and chocolate plantation and saw the beans/coco pods growing on the trees. We tried the finished product and there was opportunity to buy products from the local farmer if you wanted to. Then to the cigar factory which we enjoyed even though we don’t smoke. We got to roll the cigars ourselves and try some local alcoholic products. There is a gift shop here if you want to buy anything. Finally we went to the beautiful cathedral in Higuey which was really stunning, the architecture is very special and worth seeing, as was the local market where we tried sugar cane drink. The market was very authentic with many fresh fruits, spices and meats for sale at butchers stalls and live chickens. Our kids (14 and 11) enjoyed this tour and taste of local real Dominican life and half a day was a good length of time to enjoy the local culture for them. Would recommend.

Our guide, Diómedes, was excellent. He was very informative and had a warm, welcoming manner. We especially loved seeing the typical house where we learned about coffee and cacao production. Going to the cigar factory was a great experience as we saw how cigars are made. I would recommend this tour if you care about having authentic experiences that show aspects of local life.

Driver and tour guide was very busy on his phone and not attending to the guests. He received numerous calls in the morning during the event. He was knowledgeable about the area though and followed our instructions as asked. There needs to be some warning for guests about the tour of the Higuey markets, very dirty, smelly and unsanitary conditions. Not all tourists will want to see this poverty and filth. Too many opportunities to buy cigars, liquor and unneeded souvenirs. Overall though, a good trip worth taking. Visiting the church was worth it, lovely structure and long history.
