Pompeii is one of the most magnificent and unique city in the world because it is an open-air museum in which you can touch and breathe the history of the ancient Romans.

It was destroyed by the Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD. Pompeii was covered and after buried by tons of ash and pumice stones.

Our best local and top rated guide will take you back to the Roman Empire when Pompeii and the Volcano Vesuvius area were the most beautiful resort in Italy. Let your guide lead you into this amazing journey through the highlights of the Pompeii ruins: see the gladiators gymnasium and the temple of Isis; enter the theatres and check the acoustics quality 2000 years later; be enchanted by the decorations of the Baths and the House of Menander.

Furthermore, this private tour will be a completely relaxing experience for you: you will skip the line at the entrance and our guide will be at your disposal to give you all the information you need.

What an amazing tour! We cannot recommend Lello enough! Highly knowledgeable, a lyrical story teller keeping you engaged for the entire tour. We will use Lello any time we come to the area. We did not want the tour to end! Thank you Lello!!!

Tour guide Roxanne was awesome. Very knowledgeable and fun to spend the day with. She was great! Got to see all the main spots of Pompeii and learned so much from Roxanne.

The coordination for this tour was amazing from the moment of making the reservation to the return by van after the tour was over to our original pickup place. GetYourGuide gets an A for overall coordination. Maria was our guide on 5 October, and she was good. Speaking slowly and patiently waiting for the 25-person group to move about. She was also good about not letting others jump the line. The tour itself is a group walk-about while sharing the paths with other similar-sized groups. Pompei was busy. The way to improve the Pompei experience is in the off season with a guide. This isn’t our preferred type of tour but having a guide is a terrific enhancement to what could be an otherwise uninspiring walk-about.

We booked a private tour of Pompeii and it was a fabulous experience from start to finish. Maria was vey helpful with scheduling the tour; she communicated and responded clearly and it was easy to pay online. After I booked it I decided to add the option to have a driver take us from our hotel in Sorrento. Maria made it easy to add that on.

Our guide, Italo, was wonderful. Friendly, polite, knowledgeable, and pleasant to be with. He made the experience completely enjoyable. We learned so much about Pompeii and he gave a great tour. He clearly know his stuff and likes what he does. 6 out of 5 stars! ?

Our driver, Guido, was excellent. A very kind and polite young man. He chatted with us along the way, and was very attentive and respectful. After the tour we asked him to recommend a local place for lunch, and he gladly brought us into the town of Pompeii to a local pizzeria.

Overall this tour was one of the highlights of our trip. The ruins in Pompeii are incredible and the experience was so much more than I was expecting.

Highly recommend.

Italo, our guide, was fabulous. He was knowledgeable and gave us good insight to the life of Pompei. I would recommend a private tour with him. He made it fun and we moved through the city at a good tempo. Booking with Trip Advisor was easy and reasonably priced.

We took an 4 person guided tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and spoke great English. He made sure we never waited for anything. He was respectful of others but didn’t allow anyone to push us. He was entertaining but factual. I’m pretty sure his name was spelled Etaly! He gets my highest rating!!

Our guide was Lelo. He is exceptional. He drew us in to the history, culture and lifestyle of the ancient city and we were mesmerized. He knows so much about the site and offered a context of relevance for us. Lelo's passion about Pompeii is contagious. His depth of knowledge is incredible. He is also funny and playful. We had a great time. The three hours flew by. Not to be missed. We toured with our 20 something kids.

This review is based purely off of the actual tour guide we had, not the company itself. Unfortunately though, the tour guide is the part we need to be excellent, not the admin team.

The admin office were very communicative & provided lots of information for our booking with reminders the day prior.

I was disappointed that I had booked a “half day tour” (expecting maybe minimum 4-6 hours), however received a confirmation email the day prior that the tour had been scheduled for 9am - 11am. If I had known this prior, I would not have booked this guide.

Now onto the actual tour. We arrived half an hour before the actual arrival time as specified (8:50am) so we could grab a bite to eat & keep an eagle eye on the tour guides arriving so as not to miss out on where we had to be as I had been looking forward to touring Pompeii for over 10 years.

At 8:50am (the time our guide was to collect us) we began to get nervous as we’d seen many groups come & go but still had not seen a sign for Lello & Co.. At around 8:55am, worried we had missed out, we called the office however were unable to reach them which resulted in communication via WhatsApp. We explained that our guide was no where to be seen, to which we received a reply advising that our guide was “waiting with a sign with your name on it”. We could see no such person with said sign. We wondered around & saw nothing. By chance, we overheard another couple looking for the same tour group, we then huddled together to find our guide, by now it was 9am.

Still. No. Guide.

At this point I felt like I had organised a scam, not a tour guide.

Eventually, we saw a man hurrying towards the crowds (definitely not onsite prior to 9am) with a small sheet of paper with our names on it (mind you - it was held at waist height which made it hard to read even with the small crowd). We then found our last couple in our group, as they also could not find the guide & were on the phone to the company’s office.

The tour guide - “Italio”

We walked through the gates after waiting for Italio to hastily organise the tickets for our group, being pointed to wait off to the side until this was done.

We then spent around 15 minutes outside of the ruins talking about the map (which he did not have a copy of himself) & other things not entirely necessary to the tour. Italio made jokes that were of poor taste regarding sex & the brothels leaving an even more sour taste of this man who was late. Time was ticking away for our 2 hour slot.

By 9:25 we finally began in the ruins. I felt that Italio was not engaging in the way he discussed what we were seeing, I felt myself wandering away out of earshot to go to take photos & see for myself rather than listen to his meandering talk.

Italio did not seem to know or understand history, as there was a few things he mentioned that were not correct that my partner & I picked up on. Italio rushed us through each display & got snarky when one of the ladies asked a question that he had talked about outside the ruins. I did not feel comfortable to ask questions, nor did I feel Italio was competent to answer them.

Our tour finished right on the dot at 11am with Italio wandering off into the crowds. Mind you, he had a group of 7 people and didn’t bother to ask one persons name (only our surname was on the sheet of paper at the start).

I might be biased as we have now had 2 tours in Rome with another company (who unfortunately did not offer a tour of Pompeii on our chosen date) and experienced what we can only describe as outstanding. Very knowledgeable & passionate guides with history backgrounds/ degrees in the field.

Our tour with Italio only reminded me of the teachers I had in high school that made you hate school and not want to learn. I would not recommend Italio to anyone I know & will encourage anyone who asks to wait/rearrange their days to go with the other tour group than settle for what is available.

I guess you get what you pay for, however todays tour left us wanting for more & disappointed leaving the ruins.
