Being the largest town in the West Coast Region is Greymouth. It has a population of approximately 10,000. The town is located at the opening of the Grey River, and very close to the foot of the Southern Alps. Greymouth in Maori is Mawhera.

Other tourist attractions include the Waimakariri River, the Franz Josef Glacier, Lake Matheson, Fox Glacier, Shantytown, the Canterbury Plains, Paparoa National Park, Westland Tai Poutini National Park, Lake Brunner, Monteith's Brewery and the Grey River.
