The city of Whittier is situated near the south eastern part of Los Angeles County in the state of California. The city is populated with more than 85,000 residents, and is around 37 square kilometres in size. The city was a Spanish settlement which dates back to 1784. Manuel Nieto a Spanish soldier is considered to be the forefather of the city. The city of Whittier is named after famous Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier.
Greenleaf Avenue and Philadelphia Street are considered as the main economic zone or business hub of the city. There are two neighbourhood towns of Whittier. Hadley Greenleaf and Central Park are designated and considered as historic towns.
Climate wise this city is generally warmer during the days because of its location being nearly 29 kilometres inland of the Pacific Ocean, with the majority of rainfall occurring during winter. The city was notoriously prone to earthquakes, but necessary steps have been taken to minimize their impact since 1987.
The Pio Pico State Historic Park is one of the most visited places by tourists. The city is known for its major shopping venue, the Farmer's market. The Starlight Cinemas, La Pescadora Restaurant Sports Bar and Lounge, and King Richard's antique centre comprises the major attractions for tourists. Whittier College is also situated in the city.
This somewhat sleepy little city has quite a number of business projects that are taking place currently to boost the economy of the city.
